MR. J. P. MORGAN’S ART SALE

6 PICTURES FOR- £300,000

NEW YORK; January 31

Mr J. P. Morgan, senior partner of the well-known banlthjg house of that name, has offered six of the rarest pictures in his famous collection for sale. It is estimated that the market value of the paintings exceeds £300,000. . ' . ■ Two have already been bought by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the remaining four will, it is expected, enter private or public collections. Better known as a buyer of works of art than a heller, Mr Morgan was asked the reasons prompting his action. "I have nb special reason," he raid, “except that I understand that tho market for painting is good at the moment. I thought it might be a good idea to reduce my collection to get my estate into more manageable form. 1 am 67 years old and I am getting older all the time.” More of his pictures may be placed on the market at a later date. The six included in the present offering are Rubens’s “Anne of Austria"; twin portraits by Hals, of Heer and Mevrouw Bodolphe: Ghirlandaio’s portrait of Giovanna Tofuabuoni, a Lawrence picture of Miss Farren, and an altar triptych by Fra T.ippo Lippi.
