RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSN. The monthly meeting of the Grey R.S.A. was held, last evening. Present: Messrs A. H. Mckane (chairman), T. Jones, G. Gilbert, W. Larcombe, T. Crankshaw, H. Herring, and T. P. Ryan (secretary). It was reported that returned,men had to sign an indemnity with regard to accidents before being given work on public works at Humphreys Gully and elsewhere.—lt was decided that the Secretary interview the Engineer and obtain particulars of indemnity, and that if the report is correct, the matter be placed in the hands of the NiST.R.S.A. for rectification. Financial Assistance: Eight applications - were referred to the Finance Committee, with power to act. Flock House: Particulars were ordered to be forwarded to Reefton immediately. It was decided to write to the Women’s Institute, with a view to organising Poppy Day sales on a large scale.

Application for permission to run a sacred concert on Anzac night is to be made, and a committee was appointed to arrange a programme. Sub-Associations’ canteen funds allotments were passed for payment, and it was resolved to request all Sub-Associations to forward registrations of members immediately. Prematurely Aged and Burned-out Soldiers: In connection with the Headquarters’ effort to assist this section of returned men, and to provide them with adequate compensation, it was resolved to ask, all men under this heading to forward particulars as follows to the Secretary:—Regimental number, name and initials, age and address (town will do); dependants under sixteen, general circumstances.

HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL. [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, March 16. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor, Mr G. A. Perry, Crs. A. Armstrong, A. Thompson, J.- King, E. Teichelmann, T. W. Duff. Apologies were received’ from Crs. A. R. Elcock, G. Heinz, Cuttance and Stuart. The Treasury advised that the Hokitika Borough Loans Conversion Order Nos. 1 and 2 had been approved, and it will now be in order for the Council to carry, out the necessary proceedings in connection with- the conversion of its loan. Kanieri Electric Ltd. applied for approval of plan showing the proposed route of an 11,000-volt transmission line to supply the Westland Hospital.—Approved. Mrs M. Worthington, Sew’ell Street, wrote asking that debris from watercourse be removed. Rector, District High School, asked for the use of Cass Square on the following dates: —Saturday, 16th inst., for cricket match, and March 27 and 28 for annual school sports.—Approved. , Hon. Secretary Second Hokitika Scout Group, applied for use of Cass Square for Scout rallies on March 23. —Granted. Geo. O’Brien wrote asking for consideration in respect of the cost of water supply to his section. —No action taken. The Secretary of the Hokitika Fire Brigade wrote, asking that defective fire plugs receive attention. The Secretary of the Hokitika Harbour Board wrote pointing out that the present parking place for motor vehicles on the south side of Gibson Quay is obstructing ajccess to the timber skids, and suggesting that cars be parked on the north side of Gibson Quay, between Sewell Street and Tancred Street.—Parking place altered to north side from Wharf Street to Sewell Street.

Mr E. T. Brown, Livingstone Street, wrote asking under what conditions he can obtain a perpetual lease of Municipal Reserve No. 587, Livingstone Street. —Information supplied. Ken. G. Coles applied for use of part of Gibson Quay Reserve, about Jollie Street—Granted. Park and Murdoch wrote, regarding action to protect Council’s watermain line through mining area.—The Borough solicitor to prepare agreement on lines suggested. Mr Stephens applied for water supply to property in Park Street. —Approved. Residents of Sewell Street wrote, asking that street and footpath be tarsealed. —The Council could not do this at present, but would have inspection of the street drainage. Three football clubs wrote asking for grant towards flood-lighting Cass Square.—No money available but would not object to its installation. A vote of thanks and appreciation was passed to Messrs Robert Ford and Co. for the supply of water during shortage following flood. The Treasurer’s statement, showed receipts £1532/13/3, expenditure £715/8/8, debit balance £l4/2/4. Accounts amounting to £832/13/7 were passed for payment. The Overseer’s report was received. The staff was complimented on its splendid work. The Abattoirs’ report stated: The stock slaughtered during the month: 35 cows, 24 heifers. 55 bullocks, 256 sheep, 136 lambs, 4 pigs, 14 calves. Fees £74/13/- as against £64/9/6 for the same month last year. The offer of assistance from Hoki-tika-Kanieri Sawmills to extend part of Hoffman Street was accepted.
