DISLOCATED NECK.

WELLINGTON, February 27. Jack Clarke, aged two and a-half years, who dislocated his neck, through falling against a table at his heme in Upper Hutt, last night was admitted to hospital in Wellington, and is reported to be progressing favourably.

COMMITTED FOPv TRIAL. NELSON, February 27. As a sequel to the Hope Saddle motor fatality of December 25, when two lives were lost, the driver of the car, Leslie Stewart, was charged with negligent, driving. He pleaded not guilty, and was committed for trial. THEFT FROM GARAGE. GORE, February 27. The office at Aitken’s garage, on Mersey Street,- was entered by thieves, last evening, and £4O in the cash-box was stolen. Entry was gained to the garage by way of. the back door, which was forced. The cash-box was found at the rear of the garage. This is the third burglary at Gore in recent months. CIVIL ENGINEERS. AUCKLAND, February 26. At the annual meeting of the NewZealand Society of Civil Engineers, the treasurer’s report stated that the income amounted to £1326, and the expenditure to £1465. The following officers were elected: President, Mr H. Vickerman (Wellington); VicePresident, Mr J. McG. Wilkie (Dunedin) ; honorary treasurer, Mr J. Marchbanks (Wellington); Council, Messrs F. M. Corkill (Invercargill), F. W. Furkert (Wellington), F. W. Mac Lean (Wellington), F. E.. De Guerrier (Auckland), and J. G. Lancaster (Wellington).

BOOKMAKERS FINED. FEILDING, February 26.

Arising from charges of keeping common gaming houses, three alleged bookmakers w-ere before Mr R. M. Watson S.M., to-day. Horace Somerville was fined £75, Thomas Clarke £5O, and Benjamin McGrath £3O each, with costs. Somerville had been up for a previous offence. The Magistrate referred to the fact that a Supreme Court Judge had drawn attention to the fact that a continuation of such charges should be a case for imprisonment. However, in view- of the defendant’s good name, a fine only would be imposed.

SEAFARERS’ OFFENCE. WELLINGTON, February 27.

Harold McKenzie, 52, seaman, James Morrison, 51, bosun, and Joseph Blanche, 46, ship’s carpenter, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court, to-day, for absentning themselves from the Anglo-Candaian, w-itho'ut leave, and w-ere remanded in custody, with a direction that they be placed aboard just before she leaves to-morrow. The skipper said that they were three pretty good men. They got a little bit loose at Timaru, and he sailed w-ithout them. He had them sent through, and they arrived yesterday morning, but went ashore again without leave, and' something had 1o he done about it. He w-ould appreciate it, if they could be taken care of till to-morrow, and sent aboard the ship.
