The Christchurch morning papers, “The Press” and the “Christchurch Times” announce that, from January 2, their price will be reduced one penny. The evening papers, “Star” and “Sun” made the reduction to one penny five weeks ago. HOTEL SAFE ROBBED. " AUCKLAND, December 28. Detectives are investigating the theft of £l4O in notes and silver from the safe in a city hotel early this morning. The safe also contained £BO in £5 notes and cheques, but this was not disturbed by the thief. All the money belonged to the proprietor of the hotel. The safe was locked as usual on Thursday night. When the proprietor returned to his office early this morning, the door was unlocked. The safe did not appear to have been touched, but when he opened it, he found that well over half the money which it contained, was missing. The stolen money consisted of £1 notes and silver. CHESS TOURNAMENT CHRISTCHURCH, December 28. The New Zealand chess championships were continued to-day into the third and fourth rounds. H. R. Abbott was leading by half a point from F. K. Kelling at the end of the fourth round this evening, Abbott having won three games and drawn one, and Kelling having won three. The play, so far, has been very interesting and even. Fourth round results were:—Beyer beat Armstrong, Kelling beat Hardy, Le Petit beat Dunlop, Erskine beat Darwin, Abbott beat Gyles, Watt beat Friberg, Scott beat Gray.
