TASMAN YACHT RACE
TE RAPUNGA WINS. [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] MELBOURNE, December 27. The yacht Te Rapunga has won the Tasman, race. She crossed the official finishing line at 3 p.m. to-day. She was then eighteen days out from Auckland. The Te Rapunga passed through Port Phillip Heads at 7.40 a.m. to-day, on the last stage of the race. The other yacht, the Ngataki, is nearing the heads. She was sighted at 4 a.m. yesterday at the entrance of Bass Strait by the steamer William McArthur, 240 miles from Melbourne. When finishing the Te Rapunga came up the wrong side of the Gillibrand Light. When the mistake was pointed out, Captain Dibbern went about, and came up the right side. “Better be sure than sorry.” he said. Captain Dibbern’s first inquiry was for the Ngataki, to whom the Te Rapunga was to make an allowance of seventeen hours. He said tae voyage was uneventful, but the crew were glad it was over. Since a storm at the beginning of the race the weather had been good for sailing. The Ngataki is still unsighted at the Heads.
