GREYMOUTH REGATTA

ANNUAL EVENT REVIVED. Tile recently-formed Greymouth Regatta Club conducted their first regatta yesterday, in the Grey River, reviving what was some time ago an annual fixture on Boxing Day. There was hardly enough wind to make the yacht racing exciting, but it was interesting for the good crowd of spectators along the wharf and the South Tip, and the speed-boat race supplied thrills. The gathering was well conducted from the flagship “Silver Fern,” which was bedecked with flags. The officials were: — President, Mr J. Rhodes; Secretary, Mr A. Todd; Treasurer, Mr A. Stent; Judge, Captain Venn; timekeeper and starter, Mr F. Stent; handicapper and starter for river swim, Mr W. Gieseking. Results: Wakatere Class Yacht Championship, 2 miles: Wai Wurrie (sailed by N. Smith and H. Bellamy) 1; Walrus (R. and J. Blacktopp) 2. Wakatere Class Handicap: Ngaio (J. Reeves and T. Sheehan) 1; Mac (R. Poschicli'and. P. McDonald) 2; Taketeeze (A. Todd and J. Forsyth) 3. Times: 39min, 36min 38sec., 40 min.

Open Yacht Handicap: Wai Wurrie 1, Walrus 2, Taketeeze 3. Times: 38min 35sec, 40 min lOsec., 40min 11 sec.

River Swim, half-mile: L. Lind (2 min) 1; R. Davies (3min) 2: G. August (2min.) 3, G. Jones (2Jmin) 4, L. Daly (3min.) 5, Miss IJ. Murray (3 A min) 6. Eight competed. Miss U. Murray won the special prize for the first lady to finish. Time 16.13 2-5. Speed Boat Race, 2 miles: J. Kelly 1, J. James 2. W. Ogilvie 3. Greasy Pole Event: W. Fauth 1, C. Currie 2. Twelve competed.

CLUB BANQUET. The Regatta Club conducted a successful banquet in the Municipal Band Hall last evening, the President, Mr J. Rhodes presiding over a large gathering. Toasts were honoured as follow: — “The King”; “The Greymouth Regatta Club,” proposed by Mr P. Magee, and responded to by. the President, Messrs P. McDonald and C. Brown; “The Secretary,” proposed by Mr C. Brown and responded to by Mr A. Todd; “The Ladies,” proposed by Mr T. Sheehan and responded to by Mr Todd; “The Two Gladstone Sports” (Messrs W. Ogilvie and J. Uames), proposed by the President, ami responded to; “The Civic Band,” (proposed by Mr R. Blacktopp and responded to by Messrs L. Smith and F. E. Stent; “The Crew of the Silver Fern," proposed by Mr J. Blacktopp and responded to bj' Messrs P. McDonald and J. Longstaff: “The Press,” (proposed by Mr L. Smith and the President, and responded to by Mr J. Anderson.

During the evening, the President thanked all who had assisted the new club in making a success of their first regatta; Captains Venn and Cox for assistance given; Messrs L. Wilson and J. Darwell for two valuable cups: Messrs P. McDonald and J. Longstaff for the use of their trawler “Silver Fern” as flag ship; Messrs F. Stent (timekeeper and starter), W. Gieseking (handicapper and starter for swimming event), the McLean Park Committee for their able co-operation and the Harbour Board

for the use of flags, etc. Special mention he said, was due to Messrs W. Ogilvie and J. James, of Gladstone Siding, for the manner in which the speed boat event was organised. McLEAN PARK GALA. The annual gala was conducted by the McLean Park Committee at the Park yesterday, in conjunction with the Regatta Club. There was a large gathering of children and parents, and with sports and games conducted by the Committee, and the swings and slides in the Park, the children had an enjoyable afternoon. The results of the National Dancing and the Baby Show, conducted in addition to the kiddies’ races were: — Scan Triubhais: K. Thomson 1, J. Holt 2, V. Rouse 3. Irish Jig: V. Rouse 1, N.
