HOKITIKA NOTES

[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] 1 HOKITIKA. December 2(5. Chrislmastide here has been happy and busy. With the preparation tor the Jubilee celebrations and superb weather, an element of gladness has been abroad, and business lias been brisk. An unusual number of visitors and home-comers have added to the gaiety. Tradesmen generally have been satisfied with their turnover. 'liie decorations for the Jubilee celebrations gave the streets a cheerful appearance, particularly at night, when the coloured lights shone out, giving a fairy-like touch to the scene. The usual Christmas-day rounds were made by the Municipal Band, bidding “Christians awake, salute the Happy Morn,” finishing at the two hospitals. The generosity of the giving also was an indication of the mood of the town. The Hospital Board attended the Christinas’ dinner at the Hospital, where the usual speeches were made and goodwill expressed. Church services were held at All Saints and St. Mary’s Churches, which had been beautifully decorated for the day. The heat on Christmas day was oppressive, and many households merely lounged, about home, while numbers spent most of their time on the beach. The heat has played havoc wtih the greenery with which the streets are decorated, and much care will have to be exercised to prevent fire. In fact, these decorations would be better down, as their withered-up appearance to-day but shows what has been intended.
