BOXING DAY RACING

FINE WEATHER AT MEETINGS TOTE FIGURES COMPARED Fine weather ruled throughout New Zealand yesterday, and the ten racing clubs that held meetings, were well patronised. Five showed an increase on totalisator turnover, as compared with Boxing Day last year. The single pool was in operation at seven meetings and win and place at three, Gore Trotting Club using the latter form of betting—to return a decrease, while Westport, Waipukurau, Wairarapa and Manawatu had a similar result, under the single pool. The sum of £170,7941 was handled by the totalisators, an increase of £4636' As the Auckland Racing Club returned an increase of £6059 for its first day, and there was the added attraction of the presence of the Duke of Gloucester at the meeting, it cannot be claimed, if the totalisator is a reliable barometer of economic conditions, that any marked improvement in that direction has made itself manifest since Boxing Day of last year. On the turnover and attendances, however, little if any loss would be shown by the Clubs operating yesterday.

It will be seen from the following figures giving totalisator returns at yesterday’s meetings, that outside the Auckland and Manawatu fixtures there was little change in the figures for

As the Government receives £9 4/6 from every £lOO handled by the totalisator, without taking into considerations its “cut” from stakes, and amusement tax, yesterday’s meetings would bring a return to the Government of approximately £15,756, “unearned income.” This large amount, extensively increased by stakes and amusement tax illustrates the difficulty under which clubs are carrying on the sport, for the revenue from the totalisator that goes to clubs does not exceed six per cent. And it is from the totalisator turnover that Clubs look for the money to enable them to carry on.

WESTLAND JUBILEE MEETING. SMALL FIELpS~YESTERDAY. Small fields in five races yesterday handicapped the Westland Racing Club at the opening- day of its midsummer meeting. There was a satisfactory attendance, although not as large as had been expected, in view, of the fact that it was held in conjunction with the Hokitika Jubilee, and the day was ideal, as regards weather conditions. The effect of small fields, on .the totalisator turnover, was marked, as five races provided for only one dividend. The public were in betting mood, which was evidenced by a small increase in the amount handled, as compared with the first day last year, a total of £4262 10/- being put through as against £4211, for seven races. Had two dividends been returned in all the events, the Club must have recorded a large increase. With two trotting events included in Saturday’s programme, the galloping fields are expected to be much larger than those of yesterday, and mucly better results should obtain. Canterbury and West Coast-trained horses divided honours yesterday, four wins going to each province. The standard of racing was fair, but would have been much more interesting had good starts been the order of the day. The fields were not sent away evenly, but all the fault, did not rest with the starter, for some of the riders were to blame for not getting their mounts smartly away. The Club lost heavily on the Thompson Handicap, which was reduced to a two horse race, and betting on it was restricted to £94 10/-. A feature of the meeting was the success gained by the Omoto trainer, C. J. Walshe, who turned his horses out in excellent condition, and had the satisfaction of leading in three winners, from six starters. The meeting was splendidly conducted, no hitch ocmirring, and the events being run well to advertised time. The President, Mr. J. J. Mclntosh, the Secretary, Mr. D. J. Evans, apd other officials had reason to be well satisfied with their work. The track was hard and fast, the races being decided in fast .times, while the public were well on the mark in their estimate of prospects. The Hokitika Municipal Band was in attendance and rendered an appropriate programme. Concluding results were as follow: —

Patrole hung on best and defeated the favourite, with Margaret Rose just clear of Hunting Call and Arctic Star. Tote £677.

NOTES ON THE RACING. Show Scratchings Clearly: Patrons of the Westland Racing Club’s meeting would appreciate a space being left on the jockey’s board for the numbers where horses arc withdrawn. The existing method of cramming all the names makes it difficult for patrons to figure out which horses have been scratched. The names of riders could also be placed on the board more expeditiously. Washed-out Colours:

Several of the jackets worn by rid.(rs at Hokitika yesterday should be renewed. The colours have been washed out, or faded to such a degree that they do not represent the tints claimed for them in the race card. The riders yesterday did not present a dapper appearance, and a general clean-up of their wearing apparel would present them in a much better light.

Arrowmid Opens Circuit: Arrowmid was always handily placed in the Pioneer Handicap, being second till half a mile from home, where she took up the running. Thereafter she was not challenged till near tho post, but had enough in reserve to hold off Wino. Arrowmid won over a similar distance at this meeting last year, and is good yet for another success. • Covered Much Ground: | Wino covered more ground than any I ether horse in the Pioneer Handicap. ‘He ran very wide at the turns, and it was that which lost him the race. Once in the straight, Wino came fast on the outside, but giving Arrowmid three lengths start in the run home proved too great a handicap. I Failed to Jump Out: , s i Earthquake missed the jump out in | the Pioneer Handicap', and trailed the ’ field for four furlongs. She then moved up into fourth place, and made a I good run from then on. Earthquake I was only half a length behind the wini nor at the post, and will improve on j that during the circuit. i Riptide Finished On: Riptide did not get away too well in the scurry for positions in the Maiden Stakes. Ho camo fast over the ; final two furlongs, however, and was j third into ‘ho straight. He had the j measure of tho leader, Backlead, near I tho post, and won full of running. He gallops easily, and has a good stride. Ho is a five-year-old gelding by Shambles, —Aritea. and. therefore, a I half-brother to the defunct Rapier. ;Ho should win further success during ' 1 the circuit. It was his third start. I ' Backlead Stopped: After taking the lead at the end of half a furlong, from Sir Gallant, Backlead showed the way to the Maiden Stakes field. Ho failed to withstand a challenge from Riptide, but beat the others easily. 1

Had Every Chance: Sir Gallant had every chance. He jumped-out first in the Maiden Stakes, but then failed to carry on, and the nearest he could get was fifth. He finds the shortest distance too long for him. Two-Hprse Race:

Royal Amphora gave Free Rose six lengths start, and a beating in the Thompson Handicap, thej r being the only starters. Royal Amphora made a nice run in the straight, and had no difficulty in overtaking Free Rose, when one hiindred yards from the post. Won With Ears Pricked: Semper Pafatus scored without undue effort in the Hokitika Handicap. After Coomassie and Lady Rene had made the pace, Semper Paratus took the lead from the former, with three furlongs to go, and made it a canter home to win with his ears pricked. Riri Was Sore: Riri failed to stride out in the principal event, and tailed the field throughout. He finished twenty lengths behind the other three starters, and pulled up sore. The track wag against him, as he was sore before the race.

Came Again: Lady Rene made the pace for five furlongs, with Coomassie in the Hokitika Handicap, but then drifted back. She came again, two furlongs from home, and finished quite well, yet not fast enough to trouble the winner and Coomassie. Wise Choice Succeeds:

Royal Sceptre made all the running in the Christmas Handicap-, but left the rails in the straight, and was beaten over the final stages by Wise Choice, who did much better than the others in the straight. Will Improve:

' White Doe was produced in big condition and in need of a race. She did not produce her customary speed in the Christmas Handicap, and an improvement can be expected from her in her next outing.

Monipere All the Way: Monipere made no race of it in the Jubilee Handicap. He set the pace, and opened up a big break on the others. He was never less, after two furlongs, than five lengths ahead of Weatherly, who was always second. Monipere was produced in excellent fettle by C. J. Walsh, of Kaiata, and is owned by Mr. W. Jeffries, Chairman of the Jubilee Committee, so- that in winning the .Jubilee Handicap, it was an appropriate victory to the occasion.

Animated Easily: First out and first home, Animated won the Stewards’ Welter easily, and gave trainer C. J. Walsh his third win. There was no change during the race, Animated leading Imperial Spear, Marmoration and Roderick Dhu. In the run home Animated was not troubled and won full of running. She retains her speed remarkably, and is at a weight under which she will still win. Not Worth Considering:

Kevjno, on his running yesterday, is not worthy of consideration. He does not like the game:, and although he has shown a good turn of speed in training work, he has never run a decent race with the colours up. He was last in his race yesterday, and prospects of him sharing in a stake are not hopeful.

Little Doubt Failed: Little Doubt does not appreciate hard tracks, and it was not surprising to find him near the rear of the field during the running of the Stewards’ Handicap yesterday. It was not until he struck a yielding track, that he showed any form on his last visit to tlio Coast. Was Started Twice:

Lady Rene had a heavy day yesterday. After being started in the mile and a-quarter race, in which she covered the distance in 2.11, Lady Rene was saddled up for the “Stewards’ Handicap, of seven furlongs. It was expecting a little too much of her to be fresh for her second start, and it was surprising that she should be subjected to galloping on such a “concrete” track, when so many opportunities for winning a race are available, over the circuit. She would not be benefitted by yesterday’s efforts.

Patrole Won Well: V. Lee had Patrole looking well, and he rode a well-judged race on him. Lee kept him right up to his work, and he was in a handy position all the way in the Electric Handicap. Margaret Rose made Royal Amphora feel his weight, and Lee then came fast from the bottom of the straight, with Patrole. The horse ran much better over six furlongs than many expected, for a middle distance suits him best. Not of Much Account:

On yesterday’s running, and past form, the prospects of Rothen, Zetes, Kevino, Roderick Dhu, Sir Gallant, and Hunting Call, dp not offer much hope of a win for their connections.

Kelly’s Queen’s Plate: in the race for the Queen's Plate, at Ellerslie yesterday, Lady Kyra was smartest away, to take the lead from The Khedive and Scotland. At the half mile Scotland was first, closely followed by King Musk, Lady Kyra, Lagoon and Cherry King. Lady Kyra, Kelly and Scotland were neck and neck up the straight and the first pair were dead level passing the post, with Scotland a length back, and Sea Fox fourth.

Legatee Best Youngster: Haut Monde and Galilee lost ground at the jump off in the Great Northern Foal Stakes at Ellerslie yesterday. Gay Sheik taking command from Legatee, Penelope and Hunting Scene. Symcony came up from fifth to lead along the top with Galilee next three lengths back, closely followed by Haut Monde, Gay Sheik, Legatee, and Happy Landing. The order was practically 'the same at the turn, Legatee answering the whip well to overtake tho leaders and clinch victory comfortably by three lengths from Galilee with Haut Monde a neck away third, and Debham fourth.

The Auckland Cup Race: Southdown, Grand Jury, Great Star, and Kiltowyn -were the first away in the race for the Auckland Cup yesterday, but passing the stand Solarium took command from Great Star, Southdown, Vintage, Gold Trail, Rocket and Kiltowyn, Solarium still ■led along the back with Southdown second, and Great Star, Vintage, Rocket, Gold Trail, Kiltowyn and Grand Jury followed in that order. Solarium petered out in the straight, and Gold Trail showed a good turn of speed to win through, and -won by two lengths from King March, with Grand Jury third, half a length behind, and Caliente fourth, Time 3.25. J

AUCKLAND—FIRST bAY. GAY BLONDE WINS RAILWAY. AUCKLAND, December 2G. The presence of the Duke of Gloucester made th© opening of the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting a gala occasion to-day. Fine weather, tempered bj r a slight breeze, made conditions ideal, and there was the largest attendance seen at Ellerslie for some time. The Duke drove along the course in front of the stands to the greeting of cheers. The Royal visitor presented the cup, won by Mr. D. M. Douglas, owner of Gold Trail, who scored in the Auckland Cup, and congratulated the trainer, Mr. J. C. Cameron, and K. Voitre, who rode the mount. The tote handled £75,274, compared With £69,215 on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £6,059. Concluding results: — Gloucester Steeplechase, 3 miles. — (5) Absent (Sharkey) 1, (4) Thespis (Burgess) 2, (1) Wee Pat (J. Mcßae) 3. Thespis, who jumped beautifully, took the lead at the water jump, from Valpeen, Wee Pat, Cotsfield, Ruby Meteor and Free Air. Along the back, Thespis was six lengths clear of Jayson, who was followed by Absent, Valpeen, Ruby Meteor, Wee Pat. Thespis and Jayson were on even terms down the incline, but the latter fell at the stone wall at the straight. Callamart also came to grief, and Absent, who was then lying third, took the lead and stayed on well to win from Thespis by a neck. Wee Pat was third half a length away, and Ruby Meteor was fourth. Time 5.52. Railway Handicap, 6 furlongs.— (3) Gay Blonde (Tinker) 1, (8) Gay Seton (Horne) 2, (1) Diatomous (R. Reed) 3. Also started—(l3) Sporting Blood, (4) Rereatu, (11) Copyist, Cranford, (9) British Columbia, (7) Star Artist, (15) Sinking Fund, (5) Grand Sport, (12 Imamint car. 7.8, (6) Namakia, (12) Imamint, (14) Mother Superior car. 7.111 and (2) Silver Jubilee. The race was exciting and the issue always in doubt. Diatomous had the advantage early from Silver Jubilee, Rereatu, Gay Seton and Gay Blonde. The leaders at the turn were Gay Seton, Diatomous, Gay Blonde, Sinking Fund and Rereatu. In a good finish, Gay Blonde prevailed by a head over Gay Seton, with Diatomous a similar distance away third, and Silver 1 Jubilee fourth. Time 1.11 3-5.

Nursery Handicap, 5 furlongs.—(6) Ladv Ruler (G. Cameron) 1, (1) Bun Fight (Horne) 2, (4) Parquet (Broughton) 3. Also started—(2) Triune, (5) Round Up, (3) Kotou, (10) Light Comedy, (8) Flood Tide, (9) Tidalia, (11) Palardo, (7) Going Gay. Kotou and Lady Ruler led most for the journey, the latter having command at the turn, to stay on well and win narrowly from Bun Fight. Parquet was close up third, and Kotou was fourth. Won by a neck; a head. Time 1.01. Handicap, 1 mile.—(l) Princess Doreen 7.9 (L. J. Ellis) 1, (2) Golden Wings (Reed) 2, (3) Cricket Bat (A. E. Ellis) 3. Golden Wings led along the top, trailed by Lady Spy, Hunting Jay and Carfex. Princess Doreen was lying handy at the distance, and came up fast to get home a neck ahead of Golden Wings. Cricket Bat appeared from nowhere to get third. Lady Spy was fourth. Won by a neck; 11 lengths. Time 1 38 An inquiry was held regarding the riding of H. Wiggins and Voitre in the Auckland Cup. Wiggins, who piloted Solarium, was suspended for a month for interference, and Voitre, who rode the winner, Gold Trail, was suspended for a similar period, also for interference. .
