BOXING DAY RACING

MANY CLUBS HOLD MEETINGS

THE FIELDS AND PROSPECTS

.Racing on a large scale will be conducted in New Zealand on Boxing Day, galloping and trotting clubs holding fixtures. The principal attraction will be the Auckland meeting, but there are several other subsidiary meetings that will also attract their share of notice. On the West Coast, the summer carnival will be opened by the Westport Trotting Club, and the Westland Racing Club, both of which have attractive programmes for those who will not be journey-

ing far afield. HOKITIKA OPENS CIRCUIT. WEDNESDAY’S FIELDS REVIEWED The Westland Racing Club’s Christmas meeting opens on Wednesday next, when fifty horses are engaged for the eight events carded. The meeting will conclude on Saturday, December 29. Hokitika is to be in carnival mood over Christmas week, and on both race nights there will be late trains out, so that visitors to the town may see the street decorations and illuminations, and witness some of the carnival features. The Committee has made elaborate preparations for the entertainment of all, and should be rewarded by a monster attendance. The first race each day is timed to start at 12.15 p.m. The- system of betting will be two dividends, on the single pool. W’ith few exceptions, the horses engaged are West-Coast owned, and have no form since the Greymouth Club’s winter meeting. The most forward in condition will reap the benefit from that, at Hokitika, but as usual, others will improve as the circuit advances. The Club is deserving of generous patronage, it being one of the oldest in New Zealand, and one which has fought hard to keep functioning, against many trials. The card, with a review of prospects for Wednesday, follows:—■

Earthquake would only have to reproduce the form shown at the Metropolitan meeting last month, to win. She is not genuine, however, and has to be caught in the right mood before she will gallop at her best. Arrowmid appeals over the distance. She has been galloping through her tasks in pleasing manner, and a slow-run race over the first half-mile would suit her. She was a winner, and in second place, at this meeting last year, both distances being seven furlongs. Patrole has not been pleasing in his work, and Rothen is preferred to him. Rothen would be best suited with a yielding track, but all his training work has been of an encouraging nature. Zetes is reported to have come on nicely, and if ever this fellow is to win a race, his chance is given him here. First View is a four-year-old gelding by Lord Quex —Bay View, that won his only race at Waimate, last July. His record this season is five starts, unplaced. Wino, a four-year-old gelding by Cockpit— Ince (winner of the Greymquth Cup of 1929), scored at Banks Peninsula in October, and ran prominently at the New Zealand Cup meeting. He is a likely sort. Kevino cannot claim much support. Riptide had his first race at Ashburton early this month, and ran prominently throughout. He was fourth recently at Hororata, and should improve during the circuit. Monipere has been hitting out well in work at Omoto, and should be hard to beat, but Forceful does not appeal. The best may be:’ -'djS * Monipere Wino

MAIDEN HANDICAP, five and a-half

This race has the material to provide a close contest. Marmoration has come on well during the past few weeks, and has never been as well as at present. Sir Gallant, a quick beginner, has his chance against this lot. Fast Ace, a five-year-old by The Ace Kilrock, has yet to be placed. Epris was sent out favourite in a big field for the Novice Stakes at Hororata, but had a bad passage during the running. Sisterina and Copenna have been galloping well at Omoto but the others have yet to show cause why they should be supported. The public betting may favour Epris Sir Gallant THOMPSON, HDCP., of £7O; 6 £ur-

This will probably be a one-dividend race, for Royal Sceptre is likely to decline in favour of the Christmas Handicap. Royal Amphora has a big weight, but he is a good horse and can cany it The betting will favour Royal Amphora Margaret Rose

HOKITIKA HDCP.. of £100; H

The small acceptance for the principal race is in keeping with the posit ion of recent years. Semper P aratl ' s ’ a moody customer, won well at the New Zealand Cup meeting,, but he has never been a reliable betting proposition. Riri races betteer on the Coast than at other places, and has a for the Hokitika course. White Doe may be reserved for the Christmas Handicap. Coomassie is light y weighted, and is sure to run well. Lady Rene does not appeal, and the result may rest between Riri Semper Paratus

CHRISTMAS HDCP., of £7O, 6 fur-

Although small, the field likely to j parade for this event should be equa.i to staging a good contest. White Doe r has a useful record, but little is knownj of her recent work. Royal Sceptre

will have to do his best to hold off Cheap Money who has been galloping like an early winner in recent races. Wise Choice ran second to Grecian Prince at Hororata this month, and Arrowrose is sufficiently forward in condition to make it hard for the others. Past form points to Cheap Money Royal Sceptre

JUBILEE HACK HDCP., of £100; 1 mile: —

Weatherly ran second to Tout le Monde at Ashburton this month, and against this company should be favourite. Sky Rover beat a. useful field at the New Zealand Cup meeting, and it looks as though this pair will fight out the finish, the order preferred being

Weatherly Sky Rover STEWARDS’ WELTER, of £7O; 7

Riri will start in the Hokitika Handicap. Little Doubt had a successful visit to the Coast last Easter, but hard tracks do not favour him. Imperial Spear is a useful type that has yet to strike form this season, and the others have earlier engagements. If started, two with good prospects arc Imperial Spear Animated

ELECTRIC— L xzfiflff Withdrawals are likely to reduce the field to a small number. Hunting Call is a Nelson-trained galloper with a poor record. Arctic Star has been working well, and the promise shown by him lasst season pointed to this gelding making good. He appeals as much as any in the field, and the result may rest between ' Arctic Star Margaret Rose

AUCKLAND HAS BIG CARDKING MARCH SELECTED FOR CUP A splendid well-filled programme is at the disposal of the Auckland Racing Club, for the first day, Decemner 2G of its summer meeting. The best handicap horses in training in New Zealand will take part. _ The problems for the punter are decidedly difficult, as the fields are evenly balanced, and most candidates will lack nothing on the score of condition. The double the Cup and Railway, is what thousands have been trying to sort, and the chief interest will centre on these two races. In the cup, "Vintage, on recent performances at Riccarton, should take a lot of beating. Solarium won the Mitchelson Cup, one mile and a-half, with 7.2, then accounted for the Avondale Cup with 8.3. He should bo in the picture. King March is at the top of his form. He did well on his recent visit to Sydney, and easily accounted for the Te Awamutu.Cup last Saturday week. Gay Marigold will be bracketed with King March, and the pair will command strong support. Gold Trail carried 7.9 into second place in the New Zealand Cup, ■and she should be an improved mare at Auckland. Kiltowyn is bred to stay, on both sides of his pedigree. He should be a very fit horse on the day. Grand Jury is a goo dstayer, and his chances cannot be lightly discounted. Of the others, Southdown and Sweet Agnes look best. Of those in the Railway Handicap, Autopay will probably start at Manawatu. Sporting Blood is the best three-year-old in the Dominion at present, and seeing he has only weight-for-ago, he will have to be considered. Rereatu has been smart and consistent this season, while Diatomous should be at his best on Boxing Day. Gay Blonde, with weight-forage should take some heading off, as she is a brilliant filly. Synagogue should be in the picture. Of the others, Cranford, Star Artist, Grand Sport (winner of the Stewards’ Handicap), Tamakia, and Hother Superior look ■ best. The following horses . should > prove .worthy of consideration in their respective engagements: — Queen’s Plate: Sea Fox, Scotland, Kelly. G.N. Foal Stakes: Haut Monde, Symcony, Galilee. Robinson Handicap: Coronis, Royal Appellant, United. Auckland Cup: King March, Gold Trail, Kiltowyn. Gloucester Steeples: Neil, Thespis, Free Air. Cherry King Kelly King Musk Nun Nicer Scotland Respectful i Sea Fox The Khedive j Valpal Trackman i Final Shot Canopy __ Lagoon Lady Kyra Royal Dash GREAT NORTHERN FOAL STAKES, six furlongs. AUCKLAND SCRATCHINGS. AUCKLAND, December 22. Autopay was scratched from all Auckland’ engagements at 12.1 b p.m. to-day. Du Barry has been scratched from the Foal Stakes and Nursery Handicap. CUP DAY AT MANAWATU. STRONG FIELDS ENGAGED. The Manawatu Racing Club’s summer fixture will open at Awapuni on Boxing Day. The event on which special interest, will focus is the race for the Cup. There will be a sprinkling of South Island horses engaged to clash with the northern form. The sj stem of betting will be on the single totalisator. Horses in form are: — .. RESULTS FROM RANDWICK. HOMER AND CAPRIS WIN. SYDNEY, December 23. The Randwick races were held yesterday in fine weather. The track was in good order. The attendance was fair. The New Zealand-bred horse, Homer, registered a fine performance in winning the December Nursery Handicap, after a terrific duel with the brilliant Queenslander, Ben Field. Ben Field, on the rail, had a slight advantage over Homer until they reached the straight. They raced neck and neck until fifty yards from the post, when the strain began to tell on both of them. Homer, displaying the more stamina, won narrowly from the fast-finishing Silver Rise and Gibson, with Ben Field a head away fourth.

The Queenslander, Bachian, led all ths way to win the Villiers Stakes from Turbine. The latter moved up from sixth to within half a head of the leader a furlong from home, but could get no nearer.

Magnitas won the Holiday Handicap convincingly. He was patiently handled until the straight entrance, when he flew past the leaders, winning comfortably. G. Price, who trains Homer, had another success in the last race when Capris ran away from the Highweight Handicap field to win as she liked.

Shortly after entering the straight in the First Division of the Novice Handicap, El Senorita fell, and the horses outside, attempting to avoid her, were packed up. Tellano went down, and Not So Rad fell over him. Knox, who rode Not So Bad, and Findlay, the rider of El Senorita, escaped injury, but M. McCarten, who was on Tellano, was taken to the hospital with an injured rib. Results were: —
