CHRISTMAS DAY’S MEANING
CHILDREN WHO DO NOT KNOW. The Bishop of Oxford (Dr. T. B. Strong) 'dedicated recently an extension to the chapel of Wycliffe Hall, the Oxford Theological College, made necessary by the increased number of students. The extension has been carried out by dismantling the eastern end of the chapel •and rebuilding it further back. Stressing the need for special training for candidates for ordination, Dr Strong said that when he visited _ a parish in the diocese recently to institute a new incumbent, the new parson’s wife told him that there was not a child in the parish who knew what Christmas Day was about. “I do not know,” added the Bishop, “if that is common, but it could not have happened a hundred years ago. The person who goes out to preach tc-day has more to do than just expound Scripture and quote texts. All round he finds hostile criticism, very often undeveloped criticism, and he has to be provided with some means of dealing with it.”
