To-day’s Racing News

Work at Oinoto: There was a large attendance of ti ack watchers at Omoto this morning, but few rousing gallops were undertaken. The track continues fast.

Rot lien Sprints: Rothen, ridden by E. Moran, could not do better than 54sec. over four furlongs, from a moving start.

Useful Gallop: Arrowrose and Nautipol, after a slow start, finished over’ five furlongs in 1.7. Both moved freely, but Arrowrose could have knocked a second or two off the time. The Best Effort:

. Royal Sceptre (Moore) and Margaret Rose (Harding), from a standing start, covered live furlongs in 1.4. Margaret Rose has fully recovered from the ailment that affected her a few days ago, and both horses are particularly well.

Sundaneer Impi'oves: Sundancer clocked 1.5 1-5 over five furlongs, alone. She continues to show improvement, but her lack of size will always be against her. On the Sand:

Patrole, Forceful, Keveno, Free Rose, and Arctic Star were restricted to work on the sand, each doing two circuits at a useful pace. Haulbowline Fit:

Haulbowline proved much too speedy for Awamutu over five furlongs, covered in 1.6. Haulbowline was declined acceptance for Hokitika, owing to his connections being dissatisfied with the weights allotted him, but on past performances he did not receive any more than his fair share of weight. He will be hard to beat, first time out.

Sisterina Likely: Sir Gallant and Sisterina finished together over four furlongs in 51 3-5. Sisterina improves with every effort, and can be expected to develop into a performer of more than average ability.

Giggles wick Training 1 : Giggleswick lias fully recovered from his soreness, and is working steadily. He looks well, and will be in good order for the Greymouth and Reefton meetings.

Visitors Arriving 1 : Rhoderic Dhu arrived at Omoto last night, and Hunting Call and Semper Paratus are expected from Nelson tonight. Other visiting horses are also due this evening.

Accommodation Increased: The whole of the ground floor of the grandstand at Omoto has been made available for the tea-rooms, by the erection of a new booth on the course. Tho improvements, apart from eliminating any prospects, of congestion, will provide additional shelter, should such be needed, in the event of unwelcome weather.

Just One From Trentham: Roderick Dhu, who is to race on the West Coast and is the only Trentham horse entered, left on Wednesday evening in charge of his trainer, T. Yates. The Trentham apprentice, J. K. Robertson, is coming south to do the riding.

Rocket’s Rider: A. Russell, who will ride Rocket (7.1) in the Auckland Cup, .is not likely to be able to go to scale at less than 41b over-weight.

R. Watson Available: R. Watson, who recently arrived from India, had two engagements at Hororata last Saturday, but as his license did not arrive in time he was unable to fulfil them. Watson intends to ride on the West Coast circuit during the holidays.

Arouse for Coast: The sale of J. Brown’s Grand Knight gelding Arouse has been practically completed, the purchaser being a West Coast (South Island) patron of racing. The price arranged for is in the vicinity of £3OO.

Semper Paratus: Semper Paratus, who is at present being trained by his owner at Blenheim, will do his holiday racing on the West Coast.

Autopay’s Mission: Autopay, although an acceptor for the Auckland Railway, is now almost certain to drop that engagement for nearer-at-hand meetings, first in the sprints at Awapuni and then in the Wairarapa Cup.

Two on End: Tunneller, who won the Sandringham Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, at Trentham on Saturday, has been taken north to fulfil his engagements at Ellerslie, and he is regarded as a very promising hack.

Has Performed Well: Cranford, who is having his first visit to Ellerslie, in order to compete at the Auckland summer meeting, has some good performances to his credit this season. Cranford is to have his nex-t start in the Railway Handicap.

Cynical Kid: Every endeavour is being made to get Cynical Kid into shape for the jumping events at Ellerslie, and during the week-end he was worked the reverse way round on the inside plough. QueenTs Pla’te Candidate:

Lady Kyra, who is engaged in the Queen’s Plate at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, greatly enhanced her prospects by her performance in running second to Synagogue in the Trentham Stakes. Lady Kyra has previously won at Ellerslie, annexing the Onslow Stakes at the autumn fixture last season, so that she is not new to the course.

A Smart Two-Year-OId: Haut Monde is one of the best two-year-olds in the Dominion this season, and he will add considerable interest to the Great Northern Foal Stakes if he is taken to Ellerslie. Haut Monde is by Lord Quex from D’Oro, a sister to Desert Gold. Haut Monde is therefore a half-brother to Morland, Orofino, Orozino and Marion’s Birthday. Spell for Might: Might’s scratching for the Auckland Cup was not due to anything being amiss with him, but because his trainer considers he has had enough racing meanwhile and also because he likes easier tracks. He is to be let up for six weeks, and will not resume racing till about March. Cherry King’s Mission: Cherry King will be Grand Jury’s

companion on the Auckland trip and he should pay his way. The Queen’s Plate on Boxing Day will bo his first mission, but the company appears much above that which he has hitherto met. Still, he has the record of three wins in four recent starts.

Training Again: Gaine Carrington, who has not raced since he won the Williamstown Stakes in February, has been put into training again under C. T. Godby at Caulfield. He has done well during his holiday, and it is hoped to race him again in the autumn.

Should Be in the Picture: Diatomous, who has arrived at Ellerslie to contest the Railway Handicap and other sprint events at the Auckland summer meeting, is looking exceptionally well and has furnished into a commanding four-year-old. Diatomous has always raced well at Ellerslie on previous visits, winning there as a two-year-old and last season finishing third in the Railway Handicap, carrying 7.7, to Silver Streak and Gay Sheila, heads dividing the pair, while on the concluding day he occupied a similar position in the Royal Stakes. In the forthcoming Railway Handicap he has 8.2, and he should again be in the picture.

Likely to do Better: Killadar, who declined his engagement in the Auckland Cup, is still in the Robinson Handicap, in which he shares the honour of top-weight with Matorni. Most of his work recently has been confined to short sprints, and this evidently agrees with him, as he looks in the pink of condition. In the early part of this season Killadar’s form was disappointing, but his third in the Hack Cup, one mile, at Te Rapa, and also in the St. Andrew’s Handicap, of similar distance, at the Takapuna meeting, were both solid efforts, and he is likely to do better from now on.

Back at Ellerslie: Eilly Boy has returned to Ellerslie after an absence of several months in the south, and he is in good order for engagements at the Auckland summer meeting, which include the Gloucester Steelechase, to be run on Boxing Day. He was not raced from the Grand National meeting till he contested the hurdle race at Te Awamutu last Saturday, and he made a very fair showing. He.is one of the best jumpers in the Dominion, and as he knows the country at Ellerslie better than the majority of those engaged he should put up a creditable showing.

NOTES FROM RICCARTON. [special to “stab.”] CHRISTCHURCH, December 21. Some Useful Work: Trying conditions prevailed at Riccartcn to-day, and the tracks bore a very hard surface. The plough was in use for the early morning, when it provided soft going following a watering overnight, but later most of the galloping was executed on the inside of the trial grass, which although firm retains a good sole of grass. Owing to recent racing, and the absence of some twenty horses at Ellerslie, there was not a great deal of fast work, and what there was carried very little interest.

On the Plough: Amongst the early workers were Polydora and Scratchmere Scar, who covered a mile in 1.45, both going comfortably. They are to go to Wingatui on Sunday, and will be ridden by M. Kirwan. Polyddra has done well in recent weeks, and is in such good order at present that her trainer now regrets that he did not send her to Ellerslie.

Elloughton and Horotiu were companions over half a mile, taking 50, the former finishing well in front. She was taken to Hororata, but owing to suffering from shin soreness, and to the hard nature of the track, it was not deemed advisable to start her. She will also go south on Sunday. After breakfast Some Shamble and Silver Sight ran seven furlongs in 1.31 3-5, finishing together. This pair should pay their way during the southern holiday meetings. Colossian, assisted by First View and First Money, covered seven furlongs in 1.171-5, going easily beside First Money at the finish. Quebec reeled off half a mile in 51.

Anvil and Theatin strode over half a mile in 52 2-5. The former, who is yet to make his appearance in public, will be taken to the Greymouth meeting.

Sam Smith gave Hostile a good break, commencing a six-furlong gallop, and finished a length in front of him in the good time of 1.16 2-5, the last three in 39.

Top Rank ran over the same ground in 1.17 4-5, the last half in 53. He will be C. Emerson’s sole representative during the holidays, and will do his racing at Wingatui, Waikouaiti and Oamaru, and B. Brodie will ride him. An exalted opinion is being maintained by the handicappers regarding Top Rank, as he has won only two minor events, but is being kept well up the scale.

Grecian Prince ran six furlongs undei- restraint in 1.19 2-5. He did not suffer any ill effects from his race at Hororata, and should get on the winning list again in the next few weeks. .

Earthquake strode over five furlongs in 1.5 4-5. This mare has been very disappointing since he filled a third place at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Her turn may come on the West Coast circuit.

On the Grass: Fair Weather ran half a mile in 50 2-5, and his stable mate Grey Honour and the Rawene filly recorded 50 for a similar task. Grey Honour has made a complete recovery from his mishap last week, and will be fit for Wingatui.

Jolly Beggar, Courtyard and Manetho finished in that order close together ,at the end of seven furlongs covered in 1.28 1-5. This was an excellent work-out, especially on the part of Jolly Beggar, who will be amongst the hurdlers on the southern tour.

Riding on Coast: J- W. Jennings will be riding on the West Coast this year, his first appearance at the summer meetings there for three years. He has had a long experience of riding at Coast fixtures, and his services will doubt be readily availed of on this occasion.

All of the Riccarton horses engaged at the Dunedin meeting next week will leave on Sunday night by a special horse train, which has been put on by the Railway Department,

and which will leave Christchurch at 10 p.m.

G. Humphries met with a painful injury at. Riccarton yesterday, which will mean his absence from all of the holiday racing. He was dislodged from Abdication, who became suddenly frightened when going on to the track, and in endeavouring to save himself fell with his weight on his right hand. The limb showed signs of swelling later, and in the evening medical aid was sought, and an X-ray examination repealed a. clean break in the wrist. Recovery is not expected to be long, but the mishap came at a most unfortunate time for both Humphries and his employers, as he had made several engagements for the southern meetings. The scarcity of capable horsemen over the holidays will make his enforced idleness doubly regrettable.

SYNAGOGUE SOLD, 2.500 GUINEAS. (special to “stab.”] CHRISTCHURCH, December 21. A few days before the recent race meeting at Trentham, Mr. W. S. Clark, owner of Synagogue, turned down an offer of 2.000 guineas for his colt, made on behalf of an Australian buyer, and stated he would not take less, than 2,500 guineas. Since then he placed the colt under offer to another prospective buyer at 2,500 guineas, and the latter bad up till to-day to complete the deal. A message from Wellington states that the option to purchase was exorcised on Thursday, by Mr. C. E. Robertson, of Wellington, and Synagogue will race in his interests in the Great Northern Derby and weight-for-age races at Ellerslie, but will not contest the Railway Handicap. Synagogue will remain in T. R. George’s, stable, but will probably be shipped to Australia soon after the Auckland meeting.

Trotting No Champion: Dark McKinney is down to contest the Rowe Handicap at the Auckland meeting next week, after an absence from racing for nearly twelve months. He is no champion at his Lest, and he will have to show some form before he can be recommended as a betting proposition.

Useful Pair; It is reported that D. M’Kendry, who has a useful team in work in the Ashburton district, will be represented by Silver Axworthy and Wild Dreams at Gore and Winton. Both are above the average, and M’Kendry should more than pay expenses with his pair. Should Pay Expenses:

Francis Lincoln has been going along satisfactorily in his work at Otahuhu, and the black pacer promises to show up in his engagements at the Auckland meeting. Francis Lincoln stays on really well, and has winning performances to his credit in sprint and distance races. He should prove a very difficult horse to beat at the meeting. Competing on Second Day:

When raced at the recent Te Aroha meeting Rose Marble impressed as a very likely improver, and the hay mare should have no difficulty in winning a novice trotting event. She has not been driven to the best of advantage in her last two outings, but her turn may come on the second day of the Auckland meeting, when she will be racing in classes to suit her.

Set Severe Task: The report that Proletarian beat Auburn Lad and Jewel Pointer in a work-out at Epsom recently over a mile and a-half has not received favourable comment. This three-year-old is considered to be the makings of a first-class pacer and the one most likely to trouble the field in the Great Northern Derby, but being asked to step against horses of Jewel Pointer’s and Auburn Lad’s calibre sounds rather severe. Auckland Cup Favourite:

Good reports continue to come to hand regarding Indianapolis, and there is no doubt that the New Zealand Trotting Cup winner will start a warm favourite for the Auckland Trotting Cup. He is conceding a good start to some very fine pacers, but Indianapolis is reckoned by many to be the best horse in the Dominion, including Harold Logan, and he should be equal to the task of winning his second Auckland Trotting Cup.

Raced Disappointingly: Manco raced very disappointingly at the recent Te Aroha meeting, and his effort was not in keeping with his track work at Epsom prior to the country meeting. He is again working very freely at Epsom, and the chestnut gelding will not lack for condition when paraded for the Christmas (Handicap next week, but his prospects do not appear over bright.

Win lllion’s Reappearance: Win Huon has not had a race for nearly two years, but C. G. Lee has the bay gelding undergoing plenty of solid work at Epsom. He is engaged in the Selby Handicap next Thursday, but owing to his long absence from racing is likely to be neglected in the betting. At his best Win Huon is a very speedy trotter, and is particularly solid.

A Likely Trotter: Mataunga has been worked of late the reverse way at Addington, and the trotter has acquitted himself in great style. Mataunga possesses a fine burst of speed and is fairly, solid, and he should pay expenses on the Auckland trip. He figures on 36yds in the Selby Handicap next Thursday, and is sure to Drove difficult to dispose of.

A Brilliant Pacer: Ringtrue was allowed to forego his engagement in the Christmas Handicap at Epsom next week, but he will most likely be produced on the second day. Ringtrue is one of the most promising pacers raced in Auckland for some time. He should prove a great proposition this season to his owner-trainer, Mr J. T. Paul.

In Great Order: Worthy Light has been doing his work in groat style at Takanini, and the chestnut pacer will lack nothing on the score of condition when stepped out in the Auckland Trotting' Cui) next Thursday. Worthy Light was one of the most consistent pacers to race in the Dominion last season, and though he did not beat the best of fields he could do no more than win. He is such an honest pacer that he is likely to be prominent all the way in the Cup, and although he will be meeting the best pacers in the Dominion over two miles, Worthy Light will beat more than beats him.i
