FRENCH SUPER-LINER

“IMPOSSIBLE TO PAY” [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN.—COPYRIGHT.] (Rec. December 22, 11.30 a.m.) PARIS, December 21. During a debate in the Senate, Senator Hennessey condemned the building of the Normandie, at a cost of a million sterling as France’s reply., to the Queen Mary. He expressed the opinion that it was impossible for the Normandie ever to pay. “There are hardly any noveaux riches left,” he said. “Even Hollywood stars are travelling ’in more modest suites. Long before the Normandie has a chance of paying for herself, there will be a trans-Atlantic air service.” M. Bertrand, Minister of Mercantile Marine replied that the French companies were nearing an agreement among themselves, with foreign competitors, to abolish unprofitable competition. TRANS-ATLANTIC SERVICE. RUGBY, December 20. The proposal of a British group to buy British Red Star Liners and organise a. new Trans-Atlantic service at cheap rates was again raised in the Commons. Mr Chamberlain, replying to a question, refused to reconsider his decision to discourage the necessary capital issue to finance this project. He said that the recent revision of the scheme by the promoters did' not alter the fact it would revive uneconomic competition to the prejudice of British interests in the North Atlantic trade.
