TOWN which, in less than two

months, grew from a single tent to a populous centre, with busy traders serving miners hurrying in search of a fortune. That was Hokitika, seventy years ago. The town did not escape the vicissitudes attendant on mining camps, but the resources of the district have been called upon; gold-mining has revived under modern methods, settlement is expanding, timber-milling is an important industry, and the scenic attractions of the district are a magnet to tourists. Hokitika, next week, will celebrate its Jubilee, and the occasion gives an opportunity to pay tribute to the memory of the pioneers, whose courage and resource opened up a district of virgin bush, and laid the foundations for the progress of succeeding generations. The people of New Zealand, generally, congratulate Hokitika upon the attainment of its Jubilee, and. extend best wishes for future prosperity.
