RIDDELL BEQUESTS.

LONDON, December 20.
The “Daily Express” says: After making generous provision for his wife, the late Lord Riddell bequeathed the remainder of his fortune to the emplovees bf the “News of the World’,” and other newspapers in which he was interested, and to newspaper charities and hospitals. The estate is believed to be valued at between one and two millions sterling.
KIDNAPPERS SENTENCED.
VANCOUVER, December 20.
Three men, who kidnapped Doctor Claret, the editor of a Miami newspaper, have been sentenced to life imprisonment. His chauffeur and two others seized Dr. Claret and forced him to sign cheques. They tortured him while they obtained the cash.
BYRD EXPEDITION.
MONTREAL, December 19.
The Bear of Oakland, which is en route to Little America, says: We have taken full bunkers of coal, and now are setting up the rigging taut, in preparation for violent Antarctic gales, and are taking aboard tons of supplies destined for Little America, and provisions for the long voyage. Upon ai> rival at the Bay of Whales, we shall dredge the bottom for biologic and geologic specimens, and hope to throw light on the puzzling phenomenon of this permanent Bay in a moving, structure which, elsewhere, crumbles and varies its position.
MELROSE’S LATEST.
SYDNEY, December 20.
C. J. Melrose, of South Australia, flew from Launceston to Sydney today, 670 miles, at an average speed of 130 miles an hour.
