UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

AUCKLAND DISTRIBUTION. [FEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, December 21. A sum of almost £ 50,000 is being distributed among the relief workers in the Auckland metropolitan area this week. It comprises pay for the week’s work just completed, two weeks’ holiday pay, and an extra week’s pay as a Christmas bonus. The men are receiving from £4 to £7 each, according to classification, but will not receive any more for three weeks. BRITISH ALLOWANCES. LQNDON, December 20. The House of Commons approved of the Unemployment Assistance Regulations by 258 to 61, after a noisy interlude, in which Labourites angrily shouted protests against the Government. The protests necessitated the Speaker’s intervention. The Labourites complained that the scale of the allowances was inadequate. An amendment, moved in that connection, was rejected by 286 to 75.
