DRAINAGE BOARD RATE

A SERIOUS ERROR. [per press association.] CHRISTCHURCH, December 19. Surprise and concern was expressed at last evening’s meeting of the Christchurch Drainage Board, when the Finance Committee stated that correspondence had been received from the Town Clerk, enclosing a report from the City rate collector, that owing to an error, a certain drainage rate will provide only £316 instead of £3160. The rate collector also stated that it was too late to send out fresh demands. The only alternative was to collect the shortage on next year’s demands. After considering a report by the Secretary to the effect that the failure of the City Council to collect the rate in full would probably cause the Board serious embarrassment during the remainder of the financial year, the Board decided to adopt the Finance’s Committee’s f-ecommendations, that the City Council be requested to carry out the Board’s requirements, and take steps to collect the amount requisitioned for.
