District coal mines will complete work this week, and resume on January 7. Dobson mine finished for the year, last week. Wallsend and Liverpool mines will probably work on three days this week, and James mine will close down to-morrow night. Biackball mine will work six days this week. The large increase in timber ex-, ports from the port of Greymouth, during recent weeks, has been responsible for the waterside workers earning average pays, much in excess of earlier months. The timber had more than balanced the slackness in coal exports, and almost regular employment has been secured by the waterside workers during the past month. Reports have been circulated in Greymouth that the Municipal baths had to be closed down, owing to water shortage, and the prevalence of sickness, but the caretaker informed a “Star” reporter to-day, that the baths had not. been closed during recognised hours, since they’ were opened, this season. They are cleared out twice weekly. He also stated that it. was the intention of the Borough Council to prosecute any person who gained entrance to the baths by climbing the walls, during prohibited hours.
