ITALY AND ABYSSINIA
APPEAL TO LEAGUE WANTON ATTACK ALLEGED [by cable —PRESS ASSN— copyright!] (Recd. December 17, 9 a.m.) GENEVA, December 16. , Abyssinia has drawn the League’s attention to frontier incidents on December 8, alleging Italian aggression. The Abyssinian Note to the League complains that an Italian force on November 23 prevented the AngloAbyssinian • Mission demarking the pasture lands at Ualual, a hundred kilometres within the frontier. Italian tanks and aeroplanes, without provocation, attacked the Commission’s escort on December 5, and Italian planes bombed Adoa and Gerlogubi on December 9. The Italian Charge d’Affaires disregarded the Abyssinian protest, refused arbitration, and demanded an indemnity.
INDEMNITY DEMANDED. ROME, December 16. Official circles insist that Abyssinians pay £20,000 to do homage to the Italian flag in recognition of Italian territory, under the 1908 agreement. The Abyssinian Charge d’Affaires protested to Italy, alleging non-delivery of telegrams sent to the Abyssinian Government through Italian companies. ARBITRATION REFUSED. (Received December 17, 1 p.m.) , ROME, December 16. Italy, replying to the League, to the Abyssinian Note declines ro submit to arbitration the Ualual incident. She alleges that the Abyssinian Army committed unprovoked aggression, and insists on immediate reparations, including an apology by the Provincial Governor, the punishment of the offenders, and an indemnity for the killing and wounding of Italian Native troops. ITALY’S LOST TRADE. ROME, December 16. Italy’s exports for the eleven months in 1934, have fallen by fourteen millions sterling, compared with the same period in 1933, causing the adverse trade balance to rise from twenty-two to forty millions sterling. This accounts for the recent tightening of control over dealings in foreign exchange.
