MID-ATLANTIC RESCUES
DURING HEAVY GALE . . TWELVE LIVES LOST [BY CABLE —PEERS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.] (Recd. December 15, 9 a.m.) NEW YORK, December 14. A wireless message to Mackay Radio, reported that two members of a lifeboat crew from the Belgian steamer, Jean Jadot were lost, to-day, when the boat capsized in mountainous mid-At-lantic seas, while attempting to rescue the crew of the foundering British steamer, Unsworth. ' The message stated that two members of the Unsworth crew were rescued from the -water. Previously, the Jean Jadot lifeboat rescued five of the Unsworth crew, and presumably returned for more.
The Unsworth sent out distress calls before dawn. The Jean Jadot and the Cunarder, Ascania, are standing by. STEERING GEAR BROKEN. RUGBY, December 14. The crew of the British steamer. Unsworth, 3535 tqns, numbered thirty. She was seriously damaged in a violent gale. Her steering gear was broken, and she had a heavy list. The crew according to advices, were in a condition of great exhaustion. The Cunard White Star liner, Ascania, and Jean Jadot managed to launch lifeboats, while the Ascania stood to be in order to shelter and assist them. DEATH AFTER RESCUE (Rec. December 15, 11 a.m.) ’ NEW YORK, December 14. Twelve lives are believed to have been .lost .to-day, in the raging midAtlantic northern shipping lanes as rescue ships attempted to save the crew of the foundering Usworth. Reports to Mackay Radio , said that two members of the lifeboat crew from the Jean Jadot were lost when the boat capsized while carrying twelve survivors frmo the Usworth. Ten Usworth survivors were drowned and two sescued. LATEST MESSAGE. NEW YORK, December 14 The Ascania wirelessed that all the survivors were rescued from the Usworth,, 18 are aboard the Ascania and two aboard the Jean Jadot. The .Usworth is still afloat.
