VICTORIA’S CENTENARY

FESTIVITIES AT PORTLAND. [by CABLE PRESS ASSN. COPYRIGHT.] MELBOURNE, November 16. Though the Centenary has been in progress for many weeks, Monday will be the real Centenary Day, when, one hundred years ago, the Henty family landed at Portland. Celebrations have been in progress there this week. There have been many events of local importance, which are culminating in a great pageant on Monday in the presence of the Duke of Gloucester. Rehearsals for this pageant were held to-day, even to the driving of bullocks through the streets so as to accustom them to the commotion which is expected to prevail on Monday. Ushering in Victoria’s new century, a. ring of bonfires, girdling the State, will be lit on Monday night, and there will be displays of fireworks in every town, large and small. ANGLICAN ASSEMBLY. MELBOURNE, November 16. Beginning with ecclesiastical pageantry in a street procession in which eleven bishops in scarlet, and purplerobed clergy took part, the concluding service was held at St. Paul’s Cathedral to-day. The occasion was made notable by the presentation by Canon Barry? of a piece of stone from Westminster Abbey, which he asked should be let into the wall of St. Paul’s as a memorial of this century. This token from the Abbey to the Church, which has been nearly one thousand years standing, would bear witness, he said, to the consecration of the national life that was nurtured by Christianity.

DUKE AT LAUNCESTON. (Recd. November 17, 8 a.m.) LAUNCESTON, November 16. The welcome to the Duke here was on all fours with Hobart, the children’s demonstration being a feature, their drilling greatly impressing the Royal visitor. He attended a civic reception, called at the Travellers’ Club, then went to the City Park for a public reception, where he received addresses from various organisations. The Duke, to-night, attends a dance in his honour arranged by the City Council. Tomorrow he visits Burnie.
