REEFTON NOTES

[OUB OWN COBBISPONDINTJ REEFTON, November 16. Ninety-five men won 32 oz 2 dwts. 8 grns of gold, prospecting in the Tnangahua district under the Unemployment Board’s scheme, during October. The official opening of the Reefton Croquet Club’s green was held on Wednesday afternoon, and the function was well attended, the beautiful afternoon encouraging people out. Mrs. Stallard, President of the Club, welcomed the visitors, and declared the green open, calling on Mrs. G. W. Osbourn to play the first ball. Reference was made to the work of the secretary, Miss Arnott, whose efforts for the Club were untiring. Competitions were won by Mesdames Duff, Brooks, Solomon, J. Patterson and Stallard and Mr. W. Prentice.

The recently formed Reefton Gymnastic Club, in order to foster interest in gymnastics in Reefton, called on the Westport Club for assistance and this was willingly volunteered. Yesterday afternoon two car loads of Club members arrived from Westport. In the evening the Club staged a display in the Criterion Theatre. The Items were well-received. Mrs. Curtis acted as accompanist for the gymnastic items, and Miss McCubbin to the soloists. The programme opened with a piano solo, ■ followed by a display of fancy marching and movements by the Club members. Miss F. Leeqwas heard to advantage in “Girl of my dreams” and as an encore sang “You’re more than all the world to me." Mr. Dick Diskin gave a fancy dance. The Westport Club displayed their work on the parallel bars interspersed with the formation of groups and the pyramid building delighted the audience. The ladies’ team featured . a striking display [of bar-bell their timing and movements being well judged and graceful. Miss Teresa Hay McKenzie sang “Alice Blue Gown,” and as an encore number. “Mignon. The first half concluded with a Hungarian dance by Miss Kerr. Messrs Spencer and Phibbs opened the second portion of the programme with a set of classical poses which were much enjoyed. Miss Hay McKenzie’s humorous recitation “Dicken,” gave her hearers a good laugh. Mr. Diskin was a star item in his representation of “The Drunk.” Miss Lee sang “A Little Love, a Litte Kiss and as a recall “The Rosary.” Misses Caldwell and Dragon met in a fencing bout of three rounds, Miss Dragon being the winner. A display on the horizontal bars followed by pyramid work closed the programme. The monthly meeting of the Reefton District High School Committee was held on Wednesday. Present. Messrs J. Patterson, D. Panckhurst, C. Cleaver, C. Potter, C. Dobson, W. J. Duff, H. Campbell (secretary) and Mr Pratt (headmaster). Mr J. Paterson was voted to the chair. The Headmaster reported:—Secondary Department, roll number 26 boys, 23 girls; withdrawn, 1 girl; average attendance 24.3 boys, 21.1 girls. Primary Department—roll number—B7 boys, 73 girls; admitted 2 boys, 1 girl; average attendance 50.2 boys. 65.3 girls. Examinations: 23 pupils will sit for the proficiency examination. Four pupils for senior free place and three pupils for University entrance. Matters are now in hand for holding a six days’ camp for the School Cadet Unit in February next, when the Staff Officer of Regimental District and other members of the Staff will be in attendance. Lieut. Clarke will be in command of the unit.

The report from the Dental Nurse showed that satisfactory service had been rendered to the pupils of all the schools in . the district during the period that the Nurse was in attendance at the Reefton Clinic. The Visiting Committee reported that they had inspected the school building and grounds and some of the windows in the new school were in need of attention, as they were too difficult to open. Dux Medal and breaking-up ceremony.—lt was resolved that the usual Dux medals be procured and that the sum of £5 be granted to be expended at the discretion of the Headmaster and Secretary in a suitable breaking-up function at the school.

It was decided to hold the annual excursion to Greymouth on February 6, 1935. Visiting Committee for ensuing month: Messrs Auld and Campbell. Full advantage has been taken by the Reefton Tennis Club of the more favourable weather during the past week, and the courts have been well patronised. The men’s junior ladder, consisting of twenty competitors, has been started. The first ladder match of the season was played between L. Gibellini and Hodgins. The Club is now considering the advisability of instituting a women’s junior ladder.
