WHALE CAPSIZES LAUNCH
HARPOONER BOMBED. [per press association.] BLENHEIM, November 9. •A Tory Channel whaling party harpooned a. huge right whale from the launch “Cachelot,”* and the mammal sounded, but it came up under the launch, throwing the craft high in the air, and starting a couple of planks, while the shock exploded a spare bomb in the launch. Joseph Perano, the leader of the party, who was operating the harpoon, was right over the bomb. He was severely injured, a large part of his thigh and back muscles being torn away. The ’harporgi line was hurriedly severed, and the launch, in a sinking condition, made at full speed for the beach, which it reached in the nick of time. Mr Perano was removed to Picton Hospital, where he was operated on. His condition is serious!, but not grave. The other occupants of the launch are believed to have sustained minor injuries, but the details are meager.
