BOMB-PROOF SHELTER
“EVERY SAFETY"OFFER. Bomb-proof shelters are the latest amenity- for a building estate. The following is an advertisement, from Ashford, Middlesex: — “Live on an estate that will provide protection for your dependents in the future. A bomb and gas-proof dugcut now in course of construction that will offer safety to every resident.” The dugout is a Parge one, states the “Daily Sketch,” and everything is being done for the comfort, as well as for the safety, of those who might use it. An official of the firm building the estate said yesterday: “The dugout is being constructed in collaboration with Government experts. It will hold some 200 to 300 people comfortably. “It will be 18ft deep, 30ft wide, and 40ft long. The walls will be lined with reinforced concrete to a depth of 3ft. Over the roof will be 18in. of reinforced concrete, then 4ft or sft of soil, and then above that again a further 2ft of reinforced concrete as a bursting platform. “It will be gas proof, of course. There will be airtight doors .among ether things, and it will have electric light.”
