The Health Inspector, on behalf of bis Department, expressed appreciation of the work the Committee had done in improving the sanitary conditions in hotels in the district. It was said that the policy of adjourning applications by licensees of houses which were unsatisfactory, had met with good results.

HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, September 15. The monthly meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry), Crs. J. Cuttance, ,T. W. Duff, A. R. Elcock, Jas. King, Dr. Teichelmann, A. C. Armstrong, A. J. Thompson, G. Heinz. The following correspondence was dealt with. Secretary R.S.A., Hokitika, asking that the circular plot in Ward Road, Hokitika. Cemetery, be set aside for interments of deceased members of the R.S.A. —Granted. Mr. Leo. Dunn, Christchurch, asked whether Cass Square will be available during the holidays for a merry-go-round and side shows. —Held over. J. H. Wilson, application for remission of sanitary fee on Section 822, Brittan Street, as property not inhabited. —-Granted.

Town Clerk, Nielson, forwarding copy of resolution passed by the Nelson City Council protesting against the provisions contained in Sections 17, Sub-sections 2 and 3, of the Transport Law Amendment Act, 1933, and asking Countil to pass a similar resolution and forward it to the Prime Minister and Parliamentary Representative. —Agreed to support Nelson City Council in its protest. Secretary, Disabled Soldiers’ Civil Re-Establishment Committee, application to be given an opportunity to render for contract fo* dog collars. N.Z. Refrigerating Coy. advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of July, 1934, viz., 48 sheep. N.Z. Refrigerating Co. confirming arrangements made with Council where company contribute at the rate if £1 a week to the Council, as proportion of wages in connection with man handling offal. Hon. Secretary Hokitika Jubilee Committee, asking that in regard to Jubilee (1) That the use of the Town Hall be granted for the Christmas week for the purpose of holding an exhibition of pictures and lecturette entertainments, etc. —Agreed to. (2) That the Jubilee Committee be given the prior right in connection with any side shows in order that any income likely to be derived from such a source might be devoted to the benefit of the Carnival. (3) That the Council co-operate with the committee in the matter" of decorations and illuminations. (4) That the assistance of the Council’s staff, with regard to the various arrangements, be available in order to minimise the expenses in connection with some of the functions. —As far as possible. The Rector, District High School, wrote asking for the use of Cass Square on Wednesday, September 19, for the school’s annual sports.—Granted. Mr. Geo. O’Brien, application for domestic water service connection to Section 1278, Park Street. —Granted. Miss Esther Ward, drawing attention to the danger of fire through the overgrowth of gorse on Borough Reserve on the north side of her property in Fitzherbert Street, and asking that the growth be cut. —Gorse to be cut.

Texas Coy. (Aust.) Ltd., Greymouth, application for authority to erect two illuminated circular steel enamel motor spirit and oil signs, one in front of the premises of L. Gooch, Stafford Street, and one in front of J. Shannon’s Garage in Revell Street. —Granted subject to Inspector’s approval. Main Highways’ 4 Board, Wellington, advising that an examination for foremen and overseers of road construction will be held on November 30. The District Highways Council. Tho foreman reported on work carried out- during the month, and that tho depth of water in the reservoir averaged 10ft. 10in. , Thth Abattoir Manager reported: Animals slaughtered during the month —11 cows, 6 heifers, 87 -bullock* l , 282 sheep, 13 pigs, 10 calves. Condemned — 1 cow. Foes received, £6B/5/6; ter same period last year, £64/3/-. It was resolved that the tenancy of Reservo 446 b° terminated, and that a month be given to remove the building thereon. On the motion of Cr. King, it was decided to proceed immediately with (ho water mains along Sewell Street north, and it was resolved to construct a kerb along Stafford Street, from the corner of Britton Street to Gooch’s, to cope with storm water. It was decided to procure a second lawn mower, for the use of the dare<aker on Cass Square.
