“LABOURER’S” £9,000
DID GOOD BY STEALTH. Described in his will as a “labourer,” George Cooper', of Knighton Grange Farm, Oadby, Leicestershire, has left £9,030. It was Mr Cooper's close association with the law that led him to describe himself in his will as a “labourer.” He was practically penniless when he went to Leicester from his native village of Barsby, and it was by sheer hard work that he achieved the position he held at his death. In the course of his career he had been labourer, policeman, Relieving officer, registrar of births, and deaths, house and estate agent, dairy farmjgr, and finally, farmer of 1,000 acres. He was a remarkable man, who was fond of helping others without letting them know. A favourite charitable act of his was to entertain several hundred children to a treat, himself remaining anonymous.
By his will he gave £5O on trust for his “housekeeper, nurse and companion,” Mahalah Shaw, and the income from £3,000 for her benefit, and left certain effects to his daughter or condition that she provide a home for Mahalah Shaw.
