HEART FAILURE. ASHBURTON, July 13

Valentine Ellen, 75, married, died from heart failure while fighting a gorse fire that got beyond control on his holding at Staveley. A married daughter noticed the Maze, and going out, found Ellen dead. The clothing on the upper part of the body was slightly burned, but burns on the body were insufficient to cause death. Mr Ellen was Past Provincial Grand Master of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows.

FARMERS’ UNION. WELLINGTON, July 13

The annual conference of the Farmers’ Union ended to-day. The conference urged the Government to facilitate efforts of the Dairy Board toward internal reform and towards the rationalisation of the dairy industry, and also toward external marketing organisations; and to assume, through the Meat Board, full control of all frozen meat graders. A remit suggesting the investigation of the accumulation of interest and the compounding of interest was adopted.
