ENTERTAINMENTS

OPERA HOUSE—TO-NIGHT. “Broadwav to Hollywood” will be shown to-night. The featurettes include a Fitzpatrick Travel Talk, “Home Sweet Home,” and presents John McCormack, the famous tenor. “Bitter Tea of General Yon" will be shown on Sunday night. Proceeds in aid of Mayor's Unemployment Fund. THE ROLAND SEXTETTE. The Roland Family of talented musicians, who received enthusiastic receptions at their previous performances, will return to the Opera House on Monday night and present a complete change of programme. In conjunction with this special stage act, a dramatic drama “Eagle and the Hawk” will be shown. At Blackball to-night. “Hayseeds will be screened, and “Broadway to Hollywood” on Sunday night. At Runanga “Penthouse” will he shown tonight and “Gold Fever” on Sunday. At Waiuta to-night, “Murders in the Zoo” will be shown, and “Before Dawn” on Sunday evening. At Wallsend on Sunday, “Penthouse” will be shown.

SCHAEF’S DANCE. Whether you are young or old, you will be sure to enjoy the Grand Old Time Dance in Schaef’s Hall tonight. Schaef’s Full Orchestra provides most appropriate music and puts life into the dances. Your troubles will banish when you glide along with the carefree crowd in an atmosphere of merriment and mirth. So make up your mind now and be sure you come to Schaef’s Popular Hall for a good night’s enjoyment IKAMATUA DOG TRIALS. Next Thursday and Friday will see the annual function of the Grey Valley Collie Dog Club in full swing again. This very interesting event takes place in O’Malley’s paddock and all are welcome and the admission to ground is free. Record entries have been received and amongst these are some of the best dogs in the South Island, and come from all parts. Given good weather these trials prove not only of interest to the farming community but also to those who are dog lovers from a distance. CHILDREN’S BALL. The Civic Band’s Children’s Bali in Perotti Hall last evening drew a large attendance. There were twelve prizes. Items were given, by the following: Misses Rouse, Hazeldine, Hodgson, McGirr, Osborne, Jackson, and Master Williams. The following were the prize winners: Graham and John Courtenay (Sambo and Sambo’s Cousin); Hazeldine Mulalley (Nurse, special prize); Maurice Lousich (Maori Chief); Ray Hazeldine (“No More Strikes”); Valda Rouse (Cat and Fiddle); Leoni Michel (Mickey .Mouse); Joycelyn Rouse (Hawaiian Girl); Beth Vincent (Maori Maiden); Vivienne Hogg and Joan Walker (United Blues); Mavis Smith (Crinoline); Marie Courtenay (Mother Goose); and Hazel Jackson (Weighted in the Balance).

MASQUERADE BALL. The Runanga Miners’ Hall was filled to capacity last evening on the occasion of the first annual ball of the Runanga Labour Party. The hall was tastefully ' decorated with varicoloured streamers and balloons, and representations of Mickey and Minnie Mouse wore to be seen on the stage which was decorated with paper trellised frame. The Happiness Boys’ Orchestra supplied the music, and Mi* W. Amer was an efficient M.C. The

lucky dances were won by Miss M. Anderson and partner, Miss Hannah and partner, Mrs McTaggart and partner, and Miss M. Knight and partner. The prize for the lucky seat was won by Mrs Keown-. An excellent supper was served by the Ladies’ Committee.

KAIATA SCHOOL DANCE. There was a scene of gaiety in the Kaiata schoolroom last evening when a children’s fancy dress dance was held to augment the school improvements fund. The attendance was satisfactory, and included many visitors. Ingeniuity and originality was shown in the costuming of the children, and the task of adjudicating proved no easy task for Misses Hogan and K. Shannahan, who made their awards as follow:—Best fancy dress in open section: Kevin Hogarth (Golywog); most original costume: Pearl Faulkner (Jean Batten); open consolation: Joan Guerin (Bag of Sugar) best costume Kaiata School: Jackie Anderson (Mickie Mouse); most original costume: (Military Eallet). Under the guidance of the teachers, Mr R. R. Holmes and Miss M. Gilbert the children gave a display of special dances. Supper was served, and following this an adult dance was held.
