Jackson Barnett, the Red Indian who for many years was famous in the United States as the richest of his race, died this morning at the age of 92. Years ago ho became many times a millionaire through the discovery of valuable oil deposits on land alotted to him im a barren part of Oklahoma.

He married a white woman ,but the United States Government acting in the role of a kindly uncle on his behalf, brought lawsuits in order to get the marriage declared invalid and compelled the woman to return over $500,000 (£100,000) which the old man had given her. Large gifts to missionary societies weie also declared invalid. . 'ln the closing years of Barnett’s life the Government look entire charge of his affairs. While permitting Mrs Barnett to continue as his housekeeper it ordered that the expenses df the household should not exceed $2,500 (£500) a month.
