In the Davis Cup final European zone, Menzel defeated McGrath 10/8, 6/2, 8/6. Crawford defeated Hecht 6/4, 6/2, 6/2.
There was a capacity crowd of five thousand. The weather is> hot and sultry. Menzel opened far below his usual form. McGrath’s steadiness enabled him to lead, 5/2. Then Menzel found his form and outplayed the Australian for the remainder of the set, and ran to 4/0 in the second set, which was won comfortably. The third set was hotly contested. McGrath led 4/3. Menzel then adopted safer tactics and levelled to 5/5. McGrath ted 6/5, but. Menzel reasserted himself and captured the match. Crawford was never called on to over-exert himself to defeat Hecht. He was always the Czech’s master. The Australian’s stroke production amazed the Czech players, some of whom cried “Magical!” as he repeatedly passed his small opponent with uncanny precision on either wing.
To-morrow, Crawford and Quist will play Menzel and Hecht in the doubles.
IRISH CHAMPIONSHIPS. DUBLIN, July 13. In the Irish tennis championships women’s singles final, Mrs Sperling defeated Miss Hartigan 6/3, 6/1. Men’s singles, semi-final: Malfroy defeated Breese 4/6, 6/1, 6/4, 6/8, 6/2.
