SUNDAY PICTURES

IN COUNTRY TOWNS At the Buller Countly Council meeting on Thursday, the Hon. W. H. McIntyre raised the question of Sunday pictures at the mining townships in the Buller district, stating that as the result of an anonymous letter received by the police at Westport from Millerton, there was a possibility of the residents of Millerton, Denniston, Granity, Stockton and Hector being deprived of this innocent amusement on Sunday evenings. Mr. Mclntyre said that pictures had been shown at Millerton for the past 25 years and had proved a boon to the people of that township. Denniston was in a similar position. The police officers in these districts were all of opinion that it was in the best interests of the people that pictures be permitted on Sunday evening. Informations would probably be laid against the picture proprietors for a breach of section 18 of the Police Offences Act for Sunday trading. Whether they would be successful or not remained to be seen. Under section 390 of the Municipal Corporations Act the Borough Council had power to grant a permit for Sunday pictures, but County Councils have no such power under the Counties jA ct. Mr. Mclntyre claimed that County Councils should have the same powers as City and Borough Councils in this matter and moved that the Minister of Internal Affairs be asked to amend the Counties Act in that direction this session. Several Councillors spoke in support of the motion, which was carried unanimously.
