CARRIED WAR DESPATCHES

FOUND SHOT DEAD.

HOLLYWOOD, May 31

The police report that Mr James F. J. Archibald, the well-known Xvar correspondent and writer, who was 70 years of age, was found shot dead in his home here to-day. They regard it as a clear case of suicide. Mr Archibald had been confined to bed for more than a year, and had become despondent. In the world war he acted as a war correspondent, and in 1915 was accused of conveying from Washington Austrian and German despatches intended for Germany.

The despatches were intercepted by British authorities at Falmouth, and proved to indicate a plot to foment agitation in America. They were from Dr Dumba and Capt. von Papen (now the 'German Vice-Chancellor), who were at that time the Austrian am. German Ambassadors in Washington. The disclosure of the contents of the letters caused the expulsion of these diplomats from the United States?"

Mr Archibald declared that he was entirely innocent in the matter as he understood the letters to be purely personal.
