HOKITIKA BORO’ COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.J ’ HOKITIKA, June 9. The-Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: ff'he Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. T. W. Duff, Jas. King, A ,R. Elcock, D. P. Stuart, A. C. Armstrong, Dr. Teichelmann, A. J. Thompson. An apiology was received for the absence of CT. Heinz. The Treasurer reported receipts amounting to £ 262/13/3, payments £399/4/8, debit balance £609/13/10. Accounts aggregating the sum of £594/17/5 were presented and passed for payment. The foreman’s report on work carried out during the month was read and approved. The report showed an average depth of water in the reservoir of 4ft 4in., also that there is a leak in the reservoir, which it is intended to repair during the coming week. The Abattoirs Manager reported: — Animals slaughtered during May, 31 cows, 30 heifers, 71 bullocks, 324 sheep, 48 lambs, 9 pigs, 52 calves; condemned 2 cows. Fees received. £B3/9/6; for the same period last year £76/5/6. Tenders for the purchase of offal for the next two years were opened, and that of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company being the highest, was accepted. The question of assistance to the slaughterman was considered, and it

was decided to appoint one. r rhe resignation of Mr M. McGavin from the Council was received with regret, and it was resolved that a letter be sent him thanking him for his services on the Council. On the motion of the Mayor, it was resolved to appoint Mr J. Cuttance,

the next on the ballot at the election) to Mr McGavin's place, and that he also be arointed to the committees to which Mr McGavin was attached. The following letters were received and dealt with: — The Secretary Westland RacingClub, asking whether the Council would use the Racing Club’s horse and dray for a period, to help with the liquidation of rates. —Approved at usual rate. The Hokitika Gas Company, intimating that they are prepared to enter into a contract with the Council to supply tar for a period of one, year, with a minimum of 3.000 gal-| ions, at the rate of 6d per gallon net.; —Agreed. I The Secretary Hokitika Library | Committee, asking the Council to re-J consider its previous decision not to increase the number of subscribers’ representatives and pointing out the reasons why four additional subscribers’ representatives should be added to the Committee.—-It was resolved to meet the subscribers’ wishes lw arranging for one extra, but the Council could not alter the constitution of the Committee. The Health Inspector, Greymouth, report of sanitary inspections for .May, 193 1. * i

New Zealand Refrigerating Coy., advising that the following quantities cl meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of Aprl, 1934, viz: “ en sheep and 7 lambs. The Commissioner of Unemployment, Wellington, advising that the State Unrest Service has a surplus of tree stocks, which will be supplied to

local authorities on payment of lifting, packing, and freight charges only.. Main Highways Board, Wellington, regarding stone or gravel obtained from privately-owned sources. District Highways Council, Greymouth, asking for a report on work performed on main highways- for the year ended March 31, 1934. Overseer, Public Works Department, Hokitika, pointing out that the grade of gravel being used on the main highway, particularly in the Stafford Street section, is not satisfactory; also asking that test holes be sunk in the main highway at each chain to ascertain the depth of the gravel.—’Pests completed. From the Commissioner of Transport, Wellington, explaining the difficulty experienced by Traffic Control Officers in certain cases, and intimating that a distinctive red sticker has been forwarded to every operator who has complied with all the requirements of the Act. and this will enable traffic officers to check the traffic. —Referred to Inspector. ’Die District Highways Council, Greymouth, intimated that a conference of Traffic Inspectors will be held in Greymouth at 10.30 .a.m. on the 12th. inst. —Inspector authorised to attend. Mrs Jessie Stevenson applied for domestic water service connection on Sec. 3313, Hall Street.—Granted. Mr 11. C. Newman applied for water service connection at Sec. 1023, Hampden Street. —Granted. Mr H. C. Newman applied for permission to install a septic tank at Section 1023. Hampden Street. — Granted, subject to approval of Health Inspector.

The Westland Hospital Board forwarded a statement of Board’s receipts and expenditure for the year ended March 31, 19.34, and a stateI meat of estimated receipts ami exI penditure for the current financial [year, and intimating that the amount , of levy payable by the Council under [Section -!») of the Hospitals and I Charitable Institutions Act, 1926, for. I the year ending March 31, 1935, is £745/7/-. in nine equal instalments of £B2/16/4. It was resolved that a letter be sent the Hospital Board congratulating it on its good management. The Borough’s levy is £3O less than last year. Ihe Hokitika Fire Board forwarded estimates of expenditure for the year ending March 31. 1935, and intimating that the Council’s subsidy is fixed at £282/10/-, payable in quarterly instalments (in advance) of £7O/12/6.
