LANCASHIRE BEHIND

TYLDESLEY’S CENTURY BARNETT’S BRIGHT BATTING (BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] (Recd. June 5, 10 a.m.) LONDON, June 4. The weather was fine, but colder. . Barnett and Ebeling had a brief bright i partnership, and put on 69 in 50 mini utes. Barnett batted for 110 minutes and hit five fours. The innings lasted 355 minutes. Barnett is now fourth on the list of batsmen, and is above Bradman. Watson and Hopwood opened for* Lancashire, and runs came slowly. The pair 'added a solid seventy-two runs by lunch. Fleetwood-Smith had two successes within a quarter of an hour of the resumption, claiming the wickets of both the opening batsmen. The score was then 2 for 87. Iddon and Tyldesley, after a scratchy start, dealt appropriaely with the loose balls, of which Fleetwood-Smith delivered too many, but after he had bowled for an hour unchanged, he got Iddon with a googly, with the score 3 for 144. Hawkwood and Washbrook were also victims to whose figures were then 5 for 78. He had taken five for fifty-one since lunch. Grimmett broke Fleetwood-Smith’s run of successes, getting Farrimond, and the total was then 6 for 183. Tyldesley meanwhile was batting placidly, while Eckersley hit gaily. Fleetwood-Smith was relieved after having bowled for three hours unchanged. Tyldesley reached his century in 150 minutes,- but was soon afterwards well stumped, having batted for 165 minutes, hitting eleven fours. It was a chanceless’ innings. Eight for 268. The tailenders hit briskly, and despite Baxter’s inability to bat, finished only 82 behind. The innings lasted for 270 minutes.

McCabe and Woodfull opened Australia’s second strike brightly. The former was beaten by an outswinger. Woodfull continued confidently until stumps. Scores:

In the Test trial, England’s batting before lunch lacked conviction against the steady bowling, in which some overs from Fames and Bowes were hostile. The batsmen were unconvincing against the fast attack. Bumpers from Bowes struck Wyatt on the elbow and Pataudi over the heart. Wyatt retired hurt when his right thumb was burst by Fames. Sutcliffe’s 140 minutes’ batting was a colourless display, and was. ended by a splendid catch in the slips. Hammond plaved too late and had a middle stump uprooted. Leyland, after surviving a chance in the slips, was eventually caught in the same place.

Hendren gave a bright display, while Pataudi scored a graceful century. Ames batted very soundly and appears to bo in excellent form.
