Freight hauled through the Otira tunnel last week amounted to 12,160 tons. For the corresponding week of last year the total was 11,267 tons, and in 1932 it reached 9,335 tons.

Four statutory first offenders, found unlawfully on licensed premises during prohibited hours, were each fined 15/-, with 10/- costs, at the Magistrate’s Court, Greymouth, to-day. They were also ordered to pay equal shares of the police expenses of 2/6.

A party of forty members from the Mothers’ Union of the West Coast, including representatives from Westport, Kumara, Hokitika and Greymouth, left, this morning, for Christchurch to attend the annual festival in the Christchurch Cathedral to-mor-row. There were twenty-five representatives from Greymouth. They will return by Thursday’s express.

A further remand until Thursday was granted to-day, in the Magistrate’s Court, Greymouth, in the case of Reginald Louis Machu, who was charged that, at Greymouth, on May 19, he was in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor-car. Detective H. E. Knight stated that the case would be proceeded with on Thursday. On the application of Mr W. P. McCarthy, for Machu, bail was renewed in self £25 and one surety of £25.

The first prize in the turnip crop section at the Kokatahi-Koiterangi Winter Show was won by Mr Pryce Hamer, of Totara Flat, whose crop, when weighed up, averaged 761 tons to the acre. The Judge, Mr J. B. Stevenson, Agricultural Instructor, fisaid that the crop was exceptionally good lor the West Coast. He added that there had been very good crops of swedes and turnips all over the Coast. The mangolds exhibited at the Show by Messrs G. Dick arid S. Austin, of Reefton, were also exceptional crops.

Twelve married relief workers in Greymouth have received notification from the Oflicer-in-Charge of the Unemployment Board, in Greymouth, that work is offering for them at Inchbonnie, where protection work is to be carried out in connection with the. encroachment of the Teremakau River upon the Orangipuku River. The men will be emhployed on the contract system, the rate of pay being 1/3 an hour. The men have not received notice that they will be required to accept the employment, but unless a justifiable reason can be given, as to why any should not, any men declining will be taken off the register of relief workers.

At the Star of the West Druids’ Lodge half-yorly meeting last evening, A.D. Bro. F. P. McGirr presided. Two candidates were initiated. The Lodge Surgeon reported on sick members, and sick pay amounting to £29 1/4 was passed. Two candidates proposed for membership at last meeting were balloted for and declared elected. D.P. Bro. S. An interesting case was commenced at the Magistrate's Court, Greymouth, before Mr 11. Morgan, S.M., this after, noon, in which the principals were two miners from Ron. Victor Butler (Mr T. F. Brosnan) claimed £36/5/from James Fahey (Mr .1. W. Hannan). Plaintiff alleged that, on November 25. 1933. defendant assaulted and beat him, causing severe shock, severe bodily injuries, and considerable pain; and that, as a result of such assault, plaintiff was confined to hospital, and was incapacitated from his employment from November 25, 1933, until January 4. 1934. He claimed £lO general damages and £26/5/- special damages (loss of wages, 21 days at £1 per day. £24, ami taxi hire from Roa to the Grey Hospital, £2/5/-). ’Die hearing was proceeding when the “Star" went to press.

An Auckland message stated that already 10,000 have signed a petition throughout the North Island, with the object of forcing the Government to declare a general election at the end of this year, many prominent people being among the signatories.

The Otago A.S.R.S. has passed a resolution expressing strong . Jis approval of the appointment of Mi W. F L Ward, a man of 63, to the position of Deputy-Governor of the Reserve Bank, thus overlooking the claims of a younger and more energetic man. —Press Assn.

Although the resignation of the Bishop of Nelson (the Rt. Rev. W. C. Sadlier) officially takes place on June 30. the Bishop designate. Canon W. G. Billiard, M.A., will not arrive in Nelson to fill the vacant position until the end of the year, says the “Nelson Diocesan Gazette.”

At the recent monthly meeting of the Greymouth branch of the Women’s Temperance Union, a letter was received from Miss Blackwell, District Secretary, on the subject of business at the Convention in Wellington. As it was the Jubilee Convention of the Union a special feature had been made of a memorial service to those who had been pioneers in the work, and had passed away. Mrs Parkinson’s departure to Nelson was spoken of with regret. Next meeting being “White Ribbon Day.” it was resolved to make this a special function.

A generous and timely gift to school children in Auckland city is to be made by the Mayor, Mr G. W. Hutchison, who.announced that he intended to purchase up to 100 gallons of milk for distribution to children attending State schools, and kindergartens within the boundaries of Auckland City. The milk would be available pro rata until August 31, the date to which winter prices would prevail.’ The value of the Mayor’s gift, at the rate at which charitable institutions are supplied (1/- a gallon) is £5O. An appeal has been issued by the Holland Memorial Trustees for subscriptions towards the fund to erect a suitable memorial over the grave of the late Mr H. E. Holland, M.P., in the Bolton Street Cemetery, Wellington. Mr Holland was leader of the New Zealand Parliamentary Labour Party front 1919 to 1933, and the purpose of the memorial is to immortalise his work in New Zealand. The construction of the memorial has been entrusted to Mr R. C. Gross, A.R.B.S. who will commence his work immediately the funds are available. The Memorial Committee desire to complete the fund within the next two months, and appeals for help so that no thought of finance will be necessary after the work is commenced.
