! CRAWFORD LOSES SINGLES SPECTACULAR DISPLAYS [BY CABLE—PBJ.BB ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] PARIS, June 2. A new French tennis champion was proclaimed to-day when, after a match lasting for two hours and thirty-five minutes, Von Gramm defeated Crawford 6/4, 7/9, 3/6, 7/5, 6/3. In the women’s doubles semi-final, Misses Mathieu and Ryan defeated Misses Henrotin and Andrews 4/6, 6/2, 6/3. Von Cramm defeated Crawford after the latter had led by two sets to one, and had had match point at 5/4 in the fourth set. From start to finish, both gave a brilliant exhibition of sideline driving, each player sweeping his opponent off the court through sheer brilliancy. Crawford appeared slack in the fifth set, when Cramm raced to 5/2, and won the set 6/3 for the championship.
FRENCHMEN WIN DOUBLES. (Recd. June 4, 11.30 a.m.) PARIS, June 3. After one of the most brilliant finishes ever witnessed, and in a match extending two and a-half hours, during which both winners and losers held match points, Borotra and Brugnon defeated Crawford and McGrath, amid intense excitement.
The Australians led, 4/1, in the first set, but through Brugnon’s consistency and' brilliancy, the Frenchmen pulled up to win. They also took the second set comfortably. The Frenchmen began to show the effects of the pace in the third set, whereas the Australians improved, and when the score was two sets all, the Australians appeared the winners. The Frenchmen led, 4/2, in the final set. Crawford and McGrath made a great effort, levelling at 4/4. The Frenchmen held the match point three times in the tenth game. The Australians, attacking determinedly, saved each time, then the Australians playing beautifully held match point at 6/5, but McGrath lost touch and frequently netted. The Frenchmen eventually clinched the match, which is described as one of the most spectacular ever seen at Autiuil. The results were: —Women’s singles, final: Miss Scriven defeated Helen Jacobs 7-5. Borotra and Brugnon defeated Crawford and McGrath 11-9, 6-3; 2-6, 4-6, 9-7. Women’s doubles, final: Ryan and Mathew defeated Jacobs and Palfrey
