GRAIN AND PRODUCE [per press association.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 11. The advance earlier in the week in the potato market, and continuance of rain which interrupted the digging prompted the opinion that supplies in North Island were becoming short, and that more prompt potatoes would be wanted. However, there appears to be a larger stock of Pukekohe potatoes than anticipated, and it only required the prospect of a. scarcity to reveal them. At all events, the demand from the north has not been maintained and to-day’s prompt W’hites are worth £4 to £4/2/6 ton f.0.b.5.i., or £2/17/6 to £3 on trucks. Digging will not be resumed on a general scale until midweek. as a good deal of the potato crop in North Canterbury received a thorough soaking. Farmers are not crowding the market at present prices. Oats are meeting with very little inquiry, and the tendency is for values to ease. A Gartons are worth to 2/6 f.o.b.s.i. and B Gartons to 2/3. Fowl wheat is quoted at 3/3 f.o.b.s.i. Au easier tone developed as the result of the improved wheat threshens. The May return represents an increase of two to three bushels an acre on early season forecast, and in the aggregate if the increase is maintained until the final threshenings, a higher gross yield of about three quarters of a. million bushels. Partridge peas are unchanged at 4/2 a bushel f.o.b.s.i. There is no change in the small seeds market.

FLATS FOR GREYMOUTH. A company is being formed in Greymouth to build a substantial block of fiats in Tainui Street to provide the modern trend of compact and up-to-date residence for increasing population. A sketch of the proposed building is published in this issue, which gives an indication of the building being a handsome structure and modern in every way. Central heating, two lifts, telephone connections, constant hot water, and motor garages will be available for tenants, and the rentals are to be on a par with rentals in town to-day, so that tenants can have an up-to-date house, close to town, with modern conveniences. Complete, the scheme will cost about £14.000, of which £6,000, is to be arranged on loan. The balance is being subscribed for locally, and on the estimates provides a sound investment. Messrs P. C. Heaphy, F. W. Shallcrass and G. R. Harker are interim directors. Anyone interested can obtain full particulars from the promoter, Mr H. Sydney Smith, care Nancarrow and Co.
