HOKITIKA, May 12. 'Die monthly meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs T. W. Duff, Jas. King, A. R. Elcock, Dr. Teichelmann, W. McGavin, A. C. Armstrong, A. J. Thompson, G. Heinz. The following correspondence was realt with: — From the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, Christchurch, intimating that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika, during the month of March, i 934, viz, 12 sheep. The Valuer-General advised that Section 5 of the Valuation of Land Amendment Act, 1933, enables Borough Councils to take action for the purpose of minimising the inequality in rating cost of special valuations made on the applications of individual owners. I The Secretary, Municipal Association, asked for Council’s considered opinion on Association’s Sub-Commit-tee’s report on local body taxation. — Agreed to support.

The Public XVorks Department, Greymouth, wrote asking for value of maintenance carried out on Main Highway to the 31/3/34. for which subsidy has not been claimed. The Chairman, No. 12 District Highways Council, Greymouth, advised that under Section 11 of Main Iligh-

ways Act, 1922, the District Highways Council is required to submit to the Board recommendations as to Public Highways, which should be declared Main Highways, and also that in view <;f the continued financial position, there is very little prospect, of increasing the mileage of declared Main Highways. Mrs Margaret Rugg, applied for domestic water supply' to new premises in Fitzlierber.t Street.—Granted. The Hokitika Plunket Society applied for permission to install a Hume Septic. Tank on their new premises in Sewell Street. —Granted subject to approval. Mrs J. Stevenson applied to install septic tanks on Section 3313, Hall Street. —Granted. A. 11. Nahcekivell applied for permission to erect a verandah (overhanging verandah) at shop next to Railway Hotel.—Granted. R. J. Pedder applied for permission io erect a small cart shed on Davie Street Road Reserve, at its junction with the north side of Weld Street.— No objection offered. R. J. Stuart applied to occupy portion of Gibson’s Quay Road Res. on the river bank from the East Belt drain to Mr Win. White’s hut, applicant undertaking to clear laud of growth and plant trees. j The Manager, West Coast Motors. Ltd., applied for permission to install three petrol pumps on their property. Weld Street, two outside, and one inside the building.—Granted subject to regulation. Hon. Secretary, All Saints' Tennis Chib, applied for remission of waler and sanitary charges for the year end- | iug March 31, 1935.—N0 action taken. Mrs William Wilson offered to contribute £3 towards the cost of a pipe drain along the Hampden Street, frontage of Section 937. —Accepted. The Secretary. Hokitika Ladies’ Hockey Club, applied for reduction in the- price charged for use of the Town Hall for weekly dances. —Agreed to charge the -sum of 10/- per night. The Hon. Secretary, Westland Rugby Football Sub-Union, applied for the right to use Cass Square for nineteen half-days and for whole day on Juno 4, and with right to charge an admission fee of one shilling. The Council to receive 10 per cent of nett gate receipts. Other sporting bodies to have equal rights to playing areas when required—Granted on same terms as on previous years. The Westland Rugby Football SubUnion drew attention to the nuisance created by stray dogs wandering on the playing fields, Cass Square, during the progress of games and asked the Council to take action to safeguard the players’ interests. The Secretary,, Hokitika Public. Library Committee, forwarded copy of resolution passed by Committee, asking that the number of subscribers’ representatives on the Committee be increased from, six to eight members.—The Council considered six sufficient. Tlie Clerk, Westland County Council, advised that a communication had been received from the Public Works Department, asking the Westland County Council to take control of the Hokitika, Aerodrome, and to become.

The Manager, Kanieri Electric Ltd. advised that arrangements were being made to bring a drilling machine to Hokitika, and to sink test holes for water at the rear of their Weld Street premises, and that an endeavour would he made to furnish the Council with the approximate cost of ilie installation of a water pumping plant.—lt was resolved that the Council approve- of the work undertaken. The Secretary, Hokitika Aero Club forwarded particulars of proposed extension of local aerodrome, and asked the Council to contribute £lOO, spread, over a period of two years towards the cost of the extension. —It was agreed to contribute £lOO, spread over two rears.

The Treasurer reported receipts amounting to £327 0/9, payment £638 4/2. debit balance £397 14/10. Accounts aggregating £399 2/8 were passed for payment. The Borough Foreman reported on the breakages on the pipe line during the month, which were repaired under much difficulty. The average depth of water in the reservoir’ during the

month was one foot eight inches. The abattoirs manager reported: Stock killed during the month—3s cows, 21 heifers. 55 bullocks. 373 sheep, 67 lambs. 13 pigs. 11 calves; condemned—l cow. 3 bullocks, 1 sheep. Fees received £7O 17/-. for same period last year £65. The Town Clerk read a draught of the proposed new constitution of the Library Committee.
