BYRD EXPEDITION

DIGGING IN FOR WINTER.

BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.]

LITTLE AMERICA. April 12. With the coming long Antarctic

night only eight days away, all of the expedition members, under the direction of Mr Thomas Poulter, the second in command, are busily engaged in making the camp ready for the winter. Already the establishment is well secured. The new buildings are up. and tunnels connecting

them have been driven through the snow. The community is falling into an established and agreeable routine. Dog teams and tractors are still bringing in food from the retreat camp, and also supplies of coal, and carcases from the Bay of Whales for dog food. The winter night is rising on all sides. The sun sets earlier and rises later each day. Only rarely is it seen at all.

From the advance base, Admiral Byrd reports that all is secure for the winter. On Sunday last, he radioed that he had experienced a. blizzard. On Tuesday, he asked for and received information on the progress of events at Little America.
