Frank Sweetman, aged about 27 years, single, of Preston Ro^c L was thrown from a horse on the Omoto Road this morning. He was admitted to the Grey Hospital suffering fiom head injuries. The annual State Collieries combined picnic is being held at Hokitika to-day. There were 1,016 excursionists on the two trains, as compared with 772 last year, an increase of 244. The first train will leave Hokitika at 6.20 p.m. on return, and the second at 6.40 p.m. The Grey County Council advise receipt of the following tenders for the road approaches to the Big Riv6i bridge:—M. Doolan £539/5/4, Posa and Urlich £5OO/0/9; Doyle and McDonald £483/16/0; Chas. O’Donnell £448; Chas. Rodgers £419/10/1. The tender of Mr Rodgers has been accepted.

The killer whale, which a few weeks ago took up patrol work in front of Tahuna (Nelson) bathing sheds, much to the consternation of bathers, until frightened away by machine gun fire, after scorning the efforts of riflemen for a week or so, was seen by a local yachtsman in the bay yesterday, in a very low condition. It was probed by oars and hardly moved. It appeared to have been ripped by bullets near the tail.— Press Assn.

Regarding Dominion defence, Mr Cobbe (Defence Minister) when interviewed in regard to the strip of land that, is being taken at Auckland for defence purposes, declined to give any indication as to what use it is to be put to, but it is surmised that it is to be either a seaplane base, or for modern fortifications. It is understood that steps are being taken in other centres to strengthen the’fortifications generally, but the members of the Government are reticent about the proposals. It is expected; however, that a comprehensive statement will be issued next week. —Press Assn.

“That, on January 23, at Greymouth, with intent to defraud, he obtained from Dorothea. Lydia Critchley, the sum of 10/-, by falsely representing <

that he had been authorised by John Herbert Critchley to obtain the money from his daughter, Dorothea Lydia Critchley,” was the charge against a man who appeared before Mr H. Morgan, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court, Greymouth, to-day. Detective-Sergeant T. E. Holmes applied for a remand until Monday, and (lid not oppose . accused’s application for bail, stating that accused was a local man, and was not in good health. Accused asked for the suppression of his name, and this was granted, meanwhile, by the S.M. The remand was granted, and bail was fixed at £25, in accused’s own recognisance.

The well-known specialist in dental surgery, Mr E. Arthur Suckling, of Christchurch, is in Greymouth, and may be consulted during February at Messrs Richmond and Reynolds’ dental rooms.—Advt.

“There are some pretty bad cases,” said Mr J. W. Greenslade (Chairman of the Greymouth Relief of Distress Committee)’ to-day, “and there is a great shortage of footwear and clothing of all kinds. Donations will be greatly appreciated by the committee, and will be disposed of to deserving cases.” A total of 77 applications for assistance were dealt with by the committee, this week, and the usual parcel of foodstuffs was issued in each case. Donations of bread and cakes were received from Messrs Robertson, Riordan, Shannon and Glen, and Blanchfield. The receipt of £3O 4/- from West Coast Amusements, 1 Ltd., is acknowledged by the committee. The successful tenderers for the supply of goods, for the ensuing month are Messrs Duncan McLean, Griffen and Smith, E. McDonnell, and P. Beck. The boot-repairing depot dealt with 26 pairs of footwear, this week, the value of the work done being £7/8/6.
