HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL. [our own correspondent.] HOKITIKA, January 27. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: Crs A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff, A. C. Armstrong, M. McGavin, A. J. Thompson, G. Heinz. Cr. Elcock was voted to the chair. Apologies were received for the absence of the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) and Crs King and Stuart. The N.Z. Refrigerating Co. wrote intimating that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika. —November 1933, 41 sheep 9 lambs, December 1933, 7 lambs. The Chairman, No. 12 District Highways, forwarded particulars under -which subsidy is granted from the Unemployment Board towards bridge construction on Main Highways. The Secretary, Plumbers’ Board of New Zealand intimated ’that the licensing year has been altered to expire on April 1, instead of on January 1, and that supplies of forms for registration will be kept at the principal Post Offices. Miss M. S’ Andrewes applied for fourteen days’ annual leave from February 8 to 21, inclusive. Mr AV. N. Gaylor applied for fourteen days’ annual leave, when convenient. Mr Trotter, Sewell Street, applied for separate water service connection on account of hammer' in the existing service. The Town Clerk authorised the matter to be attended to. Mr Mackie, applied for water service connection to residence, Livingstone Street. Work authorised by Town Clerk. R. S. Huxford applied for water service connection to residence, North Revell Street. Work authorised by Town Clerk. —Approved. W. F. Selby applied for water service connection to residence, Park Street. Work authorised by the Town Clerk. —Approved. The Secretary, Hokitika Surf Club, wrote detailing Club’s financial posi-

tion, and asking for Council’s assistance in regard to deficiency in funds. —Resolved that £1 3/6 be voted. Hon. Secretary, Hokitika Aero Club Inc., intimated that the official South Island Pageant will be held in Hokitika about the 10th March next, and the Club are endeavouring to improve the landing field considerably, but are short of funds, and asked for a grant towards the improvement of the local landing ground.— £5 to be voted. The N.Z. Labour Party, Westport, intimated that as a tangible means oi perpetuating the memory of the late Mr H. E. Holland, it had been decided to eerct a Memorial Hall at an estimated cost of £2,000, and asked for financial assistance in this desirable work.—Cr McGavin moved that £5 be voted. There was no seconder, Councillors contending that they could not vote funds to political organisations. The letter was received. The Town Clerk, Greymouth, wrote intimating that the Committee representative of Greymouth citizens, was formed to arrange for a united presentation from the district to Mr Meldrum, who had Ueen Magistrate and Warden for the past twelve years, and asking whether the Borough was willing to assist. —No action taken. Mr J. F. Lumby, application for site in Cass Square lor Merry-go-round, from January 25 to February 7. (Site granted by Town Clerk at a rental of £l2/16/- for two weeks).—Approved. The Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch, regarding drain on the west, side of Sewell Street, between Weld and Stafford Streets. C. J. F. Sellers, Esq., solicitor, applied for consent to transfer of lease of Part 473, from Earl Wilson Breeze to Florence Eleanor Woods. The Hon. Secretary, Hokitika Lawn Tennis Club, applied to be granted a twentv-one years’ lease under Sec. 8, Sub-section.'7, of the Public Bodies Leases Act, 190 S (No. 240) of Lots 35, 36, and 37, of Res. No. 492 (Whitcombe. Square), area S acre, at a rental of 5 per cent, of the unimproved value of the land when such is fixed by the Valuation Department. The Club undertakes to pay all rates levied on the land and will. not. require any roading facilities for these sections other than is already provided from Park Street, but the Club ask to have the Park Street drain continued iu front of these sections, and connected with the drain which runs through the unformed part of Bealey Street.—Granted, on the motion ot Cr Armstrong. Mr S. ,1. Preston, forwarded an objection to any buildings or fences being erected on that portion of Weld Street contiguous to the northern boundary of Section 225, at the corner of Revell and Weld Streets. Consideration held over.

The Reefton Combined Schools i Picnic Committee applied for use of ( Cass Square on February 7 for annual < picnic.—Approved by the Town Clerk. ; The Foreman reported that a good < deal of the time during the month was occupied with attention to the water ’ supply, several breaks in the pipe line . occurring. The average depth of I water in the reservoir was one foot now 3ft. Bin. It was resolved that the Town Clerk be authorised to procure a stop valve. The Abattoirs Manager reported stock slaughtered during the month: 13 cows, 25 heifers, 46 bullocks, 269 sheep, 272 lambs, 3 pigs, 8 calves; condemned, nil. Fees received £7l 4/-; for the same period last year £7O/14/6. It was resolved to supply household, water to Mr North on North Spit (out of borough) for £1 per annum, applicant to pay the cost of connection. It was resolved to call applications for grazing rigids of Ihe Botanic Reserve. returnable at next meeting. 'Hie Foreman reported that the cost of putting in a drainage system in part of Revell Street would be £245 7/-. —Consideration was held over for further information. The Treasurer reported receipts £562/1/5, payments £1668/11/-, debit £223/19/9. ' Accounts amounting to £lO2l/15/11 were passed for payment.
