CLIFFORD ESTATE

DEATH DUTIES PAYABLE. [PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, December 19. The appeal from the decision of the Commissioner of Taxes in assessing for death duties part of the estate of the late Sir George Clifford was determined by Mr Justice Ostler to-day. The trustees under the will, who were the appellants, claimed that portion of Sir George Clifford’s estate, his interest in Flaxbourne property, had been wrongly assessed for death duties, because, as they claimed this property was transferred to his son Charles, now Sir Charles Clifford, during his father’s life time. His Honor held that the trustees had proved only that the .testator had handed over the income from the property to his son, and that he had declared his intention to make a gift. The appeal was dismissed, with 21 guineas costs.
