GOLDEN WEDDING

MR AND MRS HENRY POPE.

On Saturday last, Mr and Mrs Henry Pope, of Ruru, celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding. Mr and Mrs Pope, . who were married in Nelson, have a family of four sons and six daughters, fifty-two grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, all of whom are living. The wedding breakfast was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs Pope. The sitting room was decorated in blue and gold streamers, and the tables were adorned with bowls of roses, poppies and anemones of various shades, making a pretty display. The two-tier wedding cake, was decorated in gold for the occasion, with the words “Henry and Caroline,” in gold lettering. Members of the family present were: Mr and Mrs Pope (Junr.), Mr and Mrs Barton (Bell Hill), Mr and Mrs A. Robinson (Rotomanu), and Mr and Mrs A. B. Birchfield (Ruru). After the customary toasts were honoured, and the wedding cake cut, the family adjourned to the school, where residents of Ruru were entertained at a social and dance. Here again, the colour scheme for decorations was blue and gold with vases of flowers arranged in the corners of the room. An enjoyable evening was passed in dancing and musical items, a large number being present. During the evening songs, much appreciated, were rendered by: Mesdames Barton, Robinson, Campbell, H. Pope, Mr B. Hornby and Miss Hornby and Messrs Reid and Laffy. Music for dancing was supplied by Messrs Laffy '■ and Southern with extras by Mrs Barton and Mr B. Hornby. Mr J. Robinson, assisted by Mr H. Feary, was in charge of the floor. The winners of the Lucky Des--tiny were Mrs C. Kennedy and Mr N. Nord, while Miss Redder' and Mr Reid were successful in the lucky one-step. Humorous recitations given by Messrs P. Feary and M. Scott, were much appreciated.

The toast “The Bride and Bridegroom” was proposed by Mr R. Fitzgerald, to which Mr Pope suitably responded. Little Violet Birchfield, grand-daugh-ter of Mr and Mrs Pope, presented Mrs Pope with a bouquet.

On behalf of the residents of Ruru, Mr P. Feary presented Mr and Mrs Pope with a. travelling rug and an eiderdown. Mr Feary and Mr Fitzgerald spoke of the high esteem in which they (Mr and Mrs Pope) were held and wished them long life and happiness, those present joining in, and singing “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows,” and giving three hearty cheers. Mr and Mrs Pope suitably responded. A pleasant evening was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” Those present were:—Mesdames Pope (2), Birchfield (2), Barton, Robinson. Helem, Campbell (2), Kennedy (2), Thompson, Penn, Hines, Reid, Feary, Rankin, Minto, Connors, Nord, Fitzgerald, and Hodgkinson. Misses Birchfield, MacNaughtan, Redder, Johanson, N. Pope, M. Southern, B. Hornby, F. Minto, M. Feary, M. MacCormack, and E. Gillanders.
