NOTES ON THE RACING.

[SPECIAL TO “STAR.”]

CHRISTCHURCH, November 11.

Niffgerhoftd Wins: Doiran and Effozel disputed favouritism for the Suburban Handicap, but both failed badly. Niggerhead was the first to show out, but after going a furlong Errantry took charge and led into the straight from Night Recital, Niggerhead, Starshooter, Doiran and Niehtguard. Errantry appeared

an easy winner inside the disbut Niggerhead then ptrt inhis S m?nuy and won by a length Errantry lasting just long ea ° agh R beat Nightguard by a head. Night R cital and Mamun were close up ne. in front of Locksley, High Rank, Rational II and Starshooter, with Ef fozel and Miss Purau taile * ° ff ; ecent Nio-aerhead showed that Ins recent 10t in had done him no harm, and lie nroved Ms class in this field. Errantry ’ran his best race tor some time, an 1 may now go on imp roving. N i|M J guard was again slow over _the fist Ih-ilf and had a good deal of groyno lo make ut to get into a place> Night Recital ran a good race and will soon return to the winning list.

His Second Start: The Seymour Handicap was won in a convincing manner hy Vintage, a four-year-old gelding by Mrs J. Campbells stable. He was one of the first away and Dollar Prince into the straight, with Sam Smith, Copyist, Bon Tray and Gipsy Love following. Vintage drew away inside the distance and went on to beat Dollar Prince by two Sam Smith was a similar distance X a neck in front of Cleaner wtth a sap to Gipsy Love, who was followed ty ß Bon Tray! Lady Zephyr, Manetho, Copyist, Last Link, Davolo, and Silver made a big impression by his somewhat effortless win. This; was only his second start, his first, at Motukarara last month, where he finished last into third place hehin Rebel Star and Silver Jest. Do lai Prince ran up to his previous form, while Sam Smith, who got away well on this occasion, was again finishing on strongly. Cleaner ran his best race for some weeks, while Gipsj Love did well to be so close up atter being well back to the straight entrance.

Ranelagh Upsets: Another mild surprise was effected when Ranelagh accounted for a good ’class field in the Cressy Handicap. He and Riri gave trouble at the stait, and both were slow to move off, but there was not much pace on, the first hall taking 52, and Ranelagh, although in A rear position, was never far from the head of the field. Kerbside quickly assumed command from the start and led round the top and' into the straight from Emotion, Metal Bird, Argentic and Ranelagh, with Miladi in the last place. As soon as the run home was commenced, Ranelagh gradually worked his way to the front, while Miladi joined in the final tussle nearing the post. In a hard finish, Ranelagh secured a half length verdict from Miladi, who got up to beat Metal Bird on the post. Emotion was half a length away, clear of Argentic, who was followed by Forestry, Kerbside and Wise Choice. Ranelagh was in a proper galloping mood, and responded well to vigorous horsemanship throughout the run home. Miladi ran another peculiar race, and seems to do better from the back than in a front position, as was the case on the two middle days. Metal Bird ran another good race, while Emotion was again in the picture throughout. Argentic was disappointing, and is a long time getting back to his good previous form.

Brown Betty Again: Coronilla, favourite for the Pioneer Handicap, endeavoured to win from barrier rise, but again found the ordeal just beyond her. She entered upon the course proper well clear of Brown Betty, Queen of Song, Wonderful, Bodyline, Invoice and Marcus Cicero, who were spread out across the course. Coronilla increased her advantage commencing the run home, and it appeared as if she had set her pursuers an impossible task, but Brown Betty gradually crept up and Coronilla stopping badly submited to a half length defeat. Bodyline was a good third, a length away, with Marcus Cicero three lengths back. Then came Wonderful, Queen of Song, Silly Owl, Invoice and Master Reynard. Brown Betty has proved herself one of the best of the season’s two-year-olds, and gives indications; of developing into a good stayer. There is no doubting Coronilla’s outstanding brilliance. Her failure to run on may not be attributable to absence of stamina, but to lack of racing condition. Bodyline showed further improvement and will do better when he has furnished into a more solid youngster. Marcus Cicero ran his usual fair race, and his turn will come later in the season. Wonderful showed the effects of the strenuous programme adopted with him, while it would appear as if the supporters of Queen of Song were lucky in receiving a return from her on the soft track on Monday. Invoice was done with at the end of half a mile.

Brambletorn Prevails: The Metropolitan Handicap provided a fairly interesting race, with a close finish. Tout le Monde assumed command from the start and led’ out of the straight, but ran off the course passing the mile and a-quarter post, and fell when entering the scraping shed enclosure. Rocket was then left in charge, but at six furlongs was joined by Shatter and then led to the half-mile from Brambletorn and The Smuggler, and Locksley and Ramo, racing in pairs with Palantua and Minerval handy. Shatter was first into the straight from Rocket. The Smuggler, Ramo, Locksley, Palantua and Brambletorn all in close order. Shatter had Rocket beaten inside the distance and seemed to have the race in hand, but Brambletorn getting a run through on the inside of him, wore him down to beat him by half a length. Locksley finished the best of the remainder to gain third money a length away, two lengths in front of Rocket, who was half a length in front of Minerval, with Ramo, Palantua and The Smuggler following. Tout Le Monde got out of control, owing to the new steel bit breaking at the jump-off. His rider, J. W. Jennings, was taken to the hospital, in an unconscious condition. The horse was also badly injured. Brambletorn ran up to his North Island form and had to unwind a telling burst of speed to take advantage of a narrow opening between Shatter and the rails. The latter ran a great race under his light weight horseman, who, however, was unable to get the most out of him when required over the last furlong. Locksley surprised by his placing, especially after having had' a race earlier in the day, but this evidently benefited him. On the other hand, those behind him were all well beaten half-way down the running, and apparently had had enough at the meeting.

The Ota to Plate: Aesculus ridden by K. Voitre, was considered the best proposition in the Otaio Plate, but he was always in one of the rear positions and finished a long way back. Flying Amy and Eupator disputed the lead early, and

the former led round the home turn and into the straight from Eupator. Some Shamble, evision, Water Polo, and Walton Park. The two leadeis compounded at the distance am ■ way to Some Shamble, who m turn was tackled by Revision. In a sustained finish, Revision finished to strongly for Some Shamble and beat him by half a length. Walton Pan came very fast over the final stages and beat Night Flyer for third money two lengths away. Water Po o W next in front of Dressy, Eupatc. , Aesculus and Flower, with a gap to the bunched remainder. Revision’s win made jt appea r aa she would have fared better at the meeting it she had been kept to flat racing. She was not well placed early or at the straight entrance, but buried the opposition in th<e run home. Some Shamble raced up to re cent form, while Walton Park did his best work in the last furlong. Watei Polo ran another fair race onlj, and Eupator made a bold showing while he lasted.

Silvox Returns: . . The first favourite to win during the day prevailed' in the Stoneyhurst Handicap, Silvox recording a ve *Y n P" pressive success. He was the first to show out, but allowed Gaysome to pilot him to the far turn, where Sky Rover ran up to Gaysome, and the pair led to the straight entrance. Silvex moved up at this stage and followed Gaysome into the home run, with Sky Rover, Haere Tonu, Prostration and Guarantee in close attendance. Silvox headed Gay'some just inside the distance, and although challenged by Prostration, beat the latter decisively by a length. Guarantee executed some telling work over the last furlong, getting up to beat Gaysome for third money. Haere Tonu was next in front of Sky Rover, with Sweet Agnes last. Falkland was pulled up near the home turn, suffering a broken fetlock, and had to be destroyed. Silvox had a deserving win and was ridden an excellent race. Prostration added to his consistent record for the season, and' will develop into a good winner. Guarantee gave another glimpse of his ability, but is still a hard horse to follow. Gaysome ran herself out, while Sweet Agnes was evidently feeling the effects of her previous two hard races. Sky Rover made a very encouraging showing for a novice, and gave indications of having a useful career in front of him.

A a Family Success: Hurlingham completed a good stable double by winning the Members’ Handicap after a long, tussle with the favourite Croupier.' Kerbside led to the home turn, where Croupier moved up and led into the straight from Kerbside, Hurlingham, Fracas, Spoon, and True Shaft. Hurlingham drew up to Croupier inside the distance, and in a neck-and-neck struggle, Hurlingham gained the verdict by a neck. True Shaft finished strongly into third place, a length away, with Silver Streak, Cranford, Lordly Knight, Spoon and Cricket Bat following in that order.
