TO GIVE HOPE TO FARMERS

WELLINGTON, October 31. The announcement that it is the intention of the Government to extend the operation of the Mortgagors Relief legislation which expires on Decembei"3l next, was made in . the House this afternoon, by the Minister of Justice (Mr Cobbe) when replying to a. question by Mr Polson. Mr Polson asked the Minister to take an early opportunity of making announcement of the Government s intentions in the matter, so as to give farmers some hope for the future. The Minister said that it was the intention of the Government to bring down legislation to extend the period of the operation of the Act. Further machinery amendments to render the Act more effective were at present under consideration. Tho Harbours Amendment Bill will be introduced into the House, to-day, by Governor-General’s message. It is understood fhat” the Bill contains'no important new principle, but gives effect to a number of requests which have been made from time to time bv the Harbours’ Association. There will also be one or two amendments to remove anomalies in tho existing legislation. Eor some time past the Harbour Boards have been urging upon the Government, the necessity for bringing the Harbour’s Act up to date, but the introduction of legislation has been delayed from year to year.
