HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

HOKITIKA, October 14

The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. J. King, A. C. Armstrong, G. Heinz, T. W. Duff, and Di. Tcichclinann. Apologies lor absence were received from Cis. Thompson. Elcock. McGavin, and Stuart. Cr. Elcock was appointed to the Library Committee, in place of Cr. Thompson (resigned). Mr Wm. Connoi, slaughterman, api lied for twelve working days’ leave □i absence from October 21.—Granted oil the usual conditions. Tho Shcol of Mines, Recftou, solicited assistance towards its funds. lan J. Picston applied to install a septic tank on section 912, Hampden Street.—-Granted, approved by the Inspector. Tlic Westland Licensed Victuallers Association forwarded protest against the Council’s proposal to levy charges for extraordinary water on hotels. — Referred to Committee. W. J. Burgess, iclicf worker, applied lor lease of part of street at the corner of Revell and tipenccr streets, and authority to erect a hut thereon. —Granted, to be removed when required. 1\ J. Kirwan, motor garage proprietor wrote, asking that the annual license fee on the following kerbside petrol pumps l>; cancelled, as the pumps had not been used since the license fee was due, and the pumpcwners have been-requested to remove the pumps. —Approved. Tire Returned Soldiers’ Association asked that the Council accept halfrates for the current year, iu view of the demands on the Association’s funds for the relief of distress amongst ex-Service men and their families. — Agreed. The Municipal Association of. New Zealand wrote, intimating that a conference of delegates will be held in Wellington during March, 1934, and requesting that any remits be submitted not later than November 30 next.

J. O’Brien, M.P., wrote, intimating that the late Mr Holland’s body will be lying in state until Wednesday afternoon, and offering to arrange to place a wreath from the Council on the casket if desired. —The Mayor telegraphed Mr O’Brien, thanking him for the telegram, and' requested him to procure a suitable wreath inscribed with the Council’s sincerest sympathy, and also to convey to relatives and members the Council’s deepest sympathy and regret in their tragic loss. — Action approved. F. W. Lane applied for domestic Water service connection to section 3255, Revell Street. —Attended to. The Borough Treasurer reported receipts for month £302/13/1, payments £709/3/11, credit balance £505/15/1. Accounts aggregating £1270/0/1 were presented and passed for payment. The Overseer reported few leaks in water mains during the month. There was au average of nine feet of water in the reservoir. Various matters were attended to.

At the suggestion of Cr. King, it was decided to make a supply of 18inch pipes.

A report was received to the effect that Livingstone Street drain was constantly giving trouble owing to the timber rotting.—lt was resolved that three feet, pipes be produced from the Westland County Council. The Abattoirs Manager reported animals slaughtered during the month —9 cows, 39 heifers, 48 bullocks, 300 sheep, 20 lambs, 12 pigs, 3 calves; condemned, nil. Fees received £62 7/6; for the same period last year £ 56/8/-. The question of increasing the hours of billiard saloons to 11 o’clock was postponed' till next meeting. No action was taken respecting the request from the Invercargill Fire Board, that efforts be made to get insurance companies to increase their contributions.

Tho disposal of one of the Borough horses was left with the Mayor to arrange.

Cr. King brought up the question of tar-sealing street corners and footpaths as was proposed last year. He moved that the work be put in hand at once. —Seconded by Cr. Armstrong and carried. On the recommendation of the Standing Committee, the salary of the typist (Miss Andrews) was increased from £2 to £2/10/- per week.

GREYMOUTH AUTOMOBILE ASSN.

The monthly meeting of the Greymouth branch of the Canterbury Automobile Association was held on Friday evening. Present: Mr. G. R. Harker (.President), Dr. W. McKay, and Messrs. A. E. Kilgour, W. Sampson, L. W. Louisson, W. P. Hambleton, E. McDonnell, and the Secretary, Mr. I\'. F. Harley. The Hokitika branch wrote in reference to cyclists not having proper reflectors attached to their machines. The Chairman said it was a matter tor tho loca' authorities, and did not concern Greymouth, where the by-laws were well respected.

The Greymouth Branch of the N.Z, Locomotive Engine Drivers’, Firemen’s and Cleaners’ Association wrote as follows: —“I have been directed by my Branch to write and draw the atleniion of your Association to the dangerous practice of motorists approaching 1.1 v.-Ri'hr. a clearance of traffic (railway) at -he Cobden bridge crossing. Approaching cars or waiting cars at night stand with lights full on blazing into the vision of enginemen, and obscuring the visibility ofj lamp signals during shunting operations. This is a most dangerous practice, ami we request, that lights should bo dimmed. Furthermore, lights obstructing' visibility cause delay to motor traffic, and wo consider that with the assistance of the motorist;; delays will be decreased considerably. This is a general complaint regarding motor traffic from Greymouth via Cobikm bridge during .shunting at the I crossing, and we would be grateful if ihe Association would take up the matter.”

The Brunner Borough Council wrote asking for a grant of £4O towards widening Boyd Creek on the main highway at Wallsend. It was decided to approach the C.A.A. for a subsidy. With regard Io Flowery Creek Road, Hit Secretary was instructed to write to the Hokitika Branch, and find out if i iiad made application for a grant tow..rds this work.

'fhe resignation of Mr. G. W. Sampson, formerly assistanl-Enginecr of the I’ublic Works Department, Greymouth, was received, and it was decided that a letter of thanks be sent to him for

his valuable services whilst a member of the Association.

Mr. P. J. McLean was added to the list of West Coast members of the East and West Coast Highways League.
