WRESTLING

MAMOS DEFEATS OSWALD.'

[per press association.]

WELLINGTON, September 4

Hank Oswald’s flying tackles won the contest for Harry Mamos. when the pair, met in the Town Hall wrestling ring, this evening. Up to the sixth round honours were even, the going having been brisk and interesting. Oswald had taken a fall in the third round with a press, following repeated charges, and Mamos had equalised in the fifth with an aeroplane spin and dump. Early in the sixth round Oswald used his favourite tackling, but Mamos was unshaken, and angled for a loop slam. Twice heedless, Oswald escaped his fate by a fraction as. he charged in head down. The third time Mamos missed the hold for his slam, but he picked Oswald up bodily, turned him' over in mid-air and dumped him on his shoulders.

WALKER V. VARGA.

AUCKLAND, September 4

A wrestling contest to-night between Count Varga and George Walker ended in the fifth round in favour of Walker, who pinned his opponent, following a back loop slam. This did not appear to be as heavy as the majority applied, but it proved sufficient to keep Varga on the mat until after a two minuttes interval had expired. As Varga did not rise at the gong, Walker was declared the winner. There was loud cheering every time either man indulged in open handed. slapping, ear and hair pulling, and whenever Walker stamped upon his opponent’s bare feet.
