At the Australian ' "women’s golf championships the first round of match play provided surprises with the defeat of Misses MacLeod and Tolhurst and Mrs. Alex Russell. Miss Tolhurst had not quite recovered from her illness.

Miss Kernot defeated Mrs. Russell six and five; Mrs. Dodshun defeated Miss Lascelles 5 and 4; Miss O. Kay defeated Miss P. Jones 4 and 3: Miss Nankivell defeated Miss Peggy Nankivell at the nineteenth hole; Miss B. Gaisford defeated Miss Susie Tolhurst 3 and 2; Miss Perry defeated Miss Shirley Tolhurst 3 and 2; Miss O. Lefebyre defeated Miss Sale 2 and 1; Miss Hood-Hammond defeated Miss Mona MacLeod 8 and 7. Mrs. Dodshun remarked at the finish: “I am the solitary Mrs. left in the event.” The quarter finals will be played to-morrow. Scores in the professional purse stroke event of the Royal Melbourne Club were: —W. Bolger, New South Wales (69—74) 143; A. W. East, New South Wales (78—72) 150; C. Gray, New South Wales (76 —74) 150; E. W. Naismith, Victoria (76 —74) 150; M. L. Kelly, New South Wales, also returned a record 69 in the first round.
