BIG SCALE FORGERS

COUNTERFEIT BANK NOTES. LONDON, July 6. The “Daily Telegraph” understands that remarkable developments may follow the recent arrest in Amsterdam of two men who were in possession of 500 forged £lO Bank of England notes. Inquiries made by Scotland Yard detectives and the Continental police have led to the belief that the notes weie manufactured either in Germany oi' Soviet Russia, and that the forgers are members of an exceptionally clever gang, some of whom were caught in Paris three years ago. All the forgeries have been skilfully executed. The paper closely resembles that used for genuine notes. The water-mark has been carefully reproduced, and the printing is unquestionably the work of experts. Efforts are now being made to trace the factory where the forged notes nave been manufactured, and Scotland Yard and Continental detectives are engaged in a combined effort to solve the mystery. Already information has been received which gives the authorities reason to hope that before long the whole organisation will be laid bare. Under a scheme adopted at an international police conference two years ago all information relating to forged European currencies is sent to the International Police Bureau in Vienna.
