CHAINED BOOK TO FONT

ACTION IN CATHEDRAL. LONDON, July 3. Dr Marie Stopes yesterday chained her latest book on birth control to the font at Westminster Cathedral. Few people noticed her action, and before many of them had a chance'of looking at the book one of the Sacristans discovered it, broke the chain and took it away. Dr Stopes told a representative of the “Daily Telegraph” last, night: “I chained my book to the font so that Roman Catholics might have 1 a free copy of it to read, ft contains matter which it is vital that the whole nation should know about.

“It was partly a symbolic action, and partly an effort to let people of the Roman Catholic faith understand that there are teachings in their own religion which they know nothing about. After 1 had chained it to the font I waited a few minutes and watched one or two women read the title of the book. When my husband entered a few minutes later there was quite a crowd round it. i had placed a label on the book which read: ‘For the use of all. Not to be taken away.’ ”

A priest at the Cathedral said that one of the Sacristans snapped the chain and took the book to the Administrator.
