After Justice Ostler had suggested, in summing up, that it would he dangerous to convict on the circumstantial evidence, the jury acquitted Leonard Bicheno on the charge of driving a car negligently, and thereby causing bodily injury to Harold William Hill. The defence set up an alibi. One of the chief points in the Crown’s case was the hair found on the underpart of Bicheno’s car, which a pathologist said was similar to that of the injured man. Pleading guilty to a charge of concealment of birth, a young Maori woman, Bella Thompson, was admitted to probation for one year.

Four charges of breaking, entering and theft, and forging and uttering cheques, were preferred against Thomas George McCreath, who pleaded not guilty, in the Supreme Court today. The jury found accused guilty on all counts other than that in respect of breaking, entering and theft. He was remanded till Thursday for sentence. Charles Robert McCreath pleaded guilty to nine charges of breaking, entering and theft, and one charge of theft, and to another charge of theft, one charge of breaking and entering with intent by day, and one charge of breaking, entering and theft by day. He was remanded for sentence on Thursday. BANKRUPT HOTELKEEPER. CHRISTCHURCH, August 16.
